Hi all

My MIL is out of town for Easter. She always makes a special sugar cookie for holidays and I have the cookie recipe but not the glaze recipe. It is a shiny glaze. The ones I found online have corn syrup in them, but I doubt she uses corn syrup. Any ideas?

Thanks!!!!

I've never made that kind of cookie glaze, but if it's not too much bother, why not really scale down one of the corn syrup recipes and see how it turns out? My mom always had a bottle of corn syrup in the cupboard. She didn't use it often, but when she did, it was for baking.

Have you looked to see if you can find a Martha Stewart recipe for glaze? Many years ago I remember seeing some sugar cookies that she made and decorated, and they were quite beautiful. Impressively so. But then Martha would never show anything that was just ordinary.

I just mix confectioner's sugar with a little milk. Or is this the hard crunchy coating that is made with egg whites?

I was curious and looked it up. These are the ingredients for her 'royal icing':

powdered sugar, water, and meringue powder (wilton.com) and food color.

I wonder if raw eggwhite would work. And not add much, if any, water. Just a guess.

Hmm. I have no corn syrup on hand. I wonder if I could just improvise the powdered sugar/milk one. Martha's cookies are beautiful as is everything she does! I can get lost in her site for hours.

Of course I don't have food coloring either so I could run out and pick some up along with meringue powder or corn syrup.

Some would be a gift for SIL who is allergic to egg so that is out . . .

If she is allergic to egg, wouldn't she also be allergic to meringue powder? I'm pretty sure that's just a dry form of eggwhites.

I expect no matter what you make, they will taste great. Good hunting.

Here is a glaze recipe. It does contain 1 tablespoon of corn syrup, but that is all.

You can just use powdered sugar and your choice of liquid: water, milk, lemon juice or orange juice, vanilla extract...

I think that is what I am going to do, Rosemary, because I remembered that, duh, SIL is also lactose intolerant. So I think I will go with the powdered sugar and veeeery little lemon juice and a few drops of coloring.

Ok ... this is totally New York, but when you talked about sugar cookies, what came to mind was black & whites. here's the black & white cookie recipe I've used, including the white glaze. Gotta say, ordinary corn syrup is no more evil in small doses for a special project like this than any other processed sugar - I'm guessing if you want to go "health food" you could substitute agave syrup with no notable consequences whatsoever. Exactly the same sweetness and consistency. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Black-and-White-Cookies-106171

agreed, ordinary corn syrup is not worse and may actually be better than powdered sugar - those tiny particles must hit the blood sugar absolutely immediately. But if it's a question of using what's on hand vs going to the store, powdered sugar may already be in the pantry.

After tasting my icing, in which I used 2/3 c. powdered sugar to 1 1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice, I am pretty sure she must not use powdered sugar. It is about a million times sweeter than hers! But oh well, it is lemony, it is good, it is shiny. The cookies themselves came out close. Now I just must remember to ask her how she does her icing! Thanks to all!
