View Full Version : Why no photos?

One of the complaints on the old boards was that there was no where to post photos or avatars. So someone started up a photo site for those boards at a Yahoo Groups site and a huge number of Simple LIvers posted pics and albums of themselves, their activities and travels (old and new), their pets, etc... So when this site opened I assumed others would do the same. So I put some photos in posts, in my profile, avatar and albums here. But after I did that I looked around and saw that almost no one else had posted pics. So I took mine off out of sheer embarrasment of being the only one. So, my question is, why don't people want to post pics in their albums like they did at the old SLN Yahoo Groups site? Is it because many here have blogs (most of which I look at and read a little bit but REALLY like to look at the pictures - time for more pictures Laura and Sacha J.!!!)? Is it a privacy issue? Although on the old SLN pic site people put pics of their projects and hobbies (Chickadee's trailer "BOB", Iris Lilys flowers, Simply GIBs bike trips) and I really enjoyed those. And have really enjoyed the photos that people here (especially bae's) have posted. Or is it just that there seems to be less people at this new site or less interest in posting overall here? Enquirering minds want to know!

I'll give it a try. Last month I visited an old college friend who quit corportate America here in Colorado to help with the family farm in Vermont. March is maple syrup season and I helped gather sap and boil it into syrup for several days. I was a hoot, though a bit of work! This is his "sugar shack" where the sap is being evaporated using a traditional wood fired evaporator. There are quite a few little cottage maple syrup operations in his area. I will never complain about the cost of the pure quill again.

And this is one of the helpers pulling some hot syrup from the evaporator. I can testify that this hot syrup on fresh homemade doughnuts is to die for. My friend's father says it's good on hotdogs, which I may wait a while to try.

Wow, I have really enjoyed these pics! I'm not much of a photographer, anyway, and I don't know how to post pics using this computer, but someday I will figure it out. I love looking at everyone's pics! Keep 'em coming.

YAY!! Thanks guys. You should put some of them (alot of them IMHO :-)!) in your profile albums so that us voyuers can look at them anytime. I think only people signed up at this site have access to the profile albums.

I didn't either but the people here (Alan and Gina especially) walked me thru it up on the practice board. It's super easy. I had deleted my albums so my pics aren't up there anymore, but the info on how to do it is.

Spartana, please put your pics back up! Would love to see them! The only reason I haven't posted any is because everytime I've tried it doesn't work, even though I've followed the directions to the letter. *sigh* The only thing I've had any luck with was my avator....

I was hoping it would come up with a thumbnail of the video and you could view it within the forum.

I'm enjoying everyone's pictures so much! The main reason behind me not adding pictures to any site (or cause) is that we live a pretty plain and uneventful lifestyle with little to no excitement (not to sound boring or anything), but really we're just plain simple folk. If in the future something extraordinary occurs or something worthy enough of sharing a pic or two comes about, I'll be more than happy to add to everyone's additions.

Taking this time to thank everyone here who contributed great pictures/videos towards this thread.

Mrs.-M, my life sounds much like yours, which may explain the scarcity of photos. We are home folk, so no exotic trips or unusual activities. Most activities are centered around the children, and I have some qualms about putting pics of the children on the Internet. Of course, pics of me hobbling around as I am now might provide some entertainment-lol, but I don't think most people around here are that desperate for amusement.

I post pictures when I feel like it, and many of those are in my album. No reason to feel funny about it. I think people have been conservative about posting alot of images because no one knew how much more money doing that would cost in this new place - something about bandwidth. Well, we still don't know. But the expressed belief at the time was that it would be better to not go hog-wild lest we outstrip the amount of money the place takes in.

People also tend to take more photos in the summer when there is more going on in their lives.

Here's a previously posted photo of Miss Cleo asking for dinner. :)

Seems to me that pictures posted using IMG tags pointed to your own photo hosting site won't use any bandwidth from SimpleLiving.

That's true. Images hosted elsewhere are rendered on the forums using the hosting site's bandwidth.
But, those photos which are hosted in a members personal album on this site do. Although I doubt there's enough of that to have much impact on this site's data flow.

Thanks Bae, Alan: that's correct. We decided to restrict photos directly in the threads to IMG tags to conserve bandwidth, but also that we weren't worried about photos in the members' personal albums. The purpose of the forum site is to connect, and pictures are a big part of that, so I don't think anyone should be shy about posting to their albums, and certainly there should be no hesitation to post IMG links in the threads. If bandwidth does need to be bumped up to accommodate the members' use of pictures, that can be done easily and without that much expense. Seriously, it's no big deal. The current amount of bandwidth was based on nothing but a total wild guess (I wouldn't even be surprised if a dartboard was involved), as we had no way even of knowing how much the forums had been using previously. Our assumption was that usage over time would show us how much we need going forward, and that we might have to bump it up to meet the community's needs.

Pictures enrich the community: NRM's viewpoint is to fit the forums to the members and not the other way around. The site is set up to be very economical to run, and additional bandwidth is also very economical. Enjoy. Share. It'll all work out.

Mira. The pictures are wonderful. I have such a love for the UK and one day hope I'm fortunate enough to visit.

Thanks for the info HK! (and Alan and Bae). So I guess it's Ok to put pics in albums or in posts and doesn't overload the server. Hope other's post some more!
