This is a shot in the dark, but wondering if anyone has any interesting, successful ideas for increasing memberships and raising more money for the Friends of the Library to support library needs?
Have you done anything that had a great outcome you'd share with me? We want to grow our Friends and do better at fund-raising. It's challenging these days of budget cuts and struggling economy.
As a FOL member myself, I am watching this thread with interest.
Our local library sold raffle tickets for baskets of paperbacks. (think Easter-basket size) They were each themed, like mystery or romance or sci-fi, etc., so you could choose which basket you wanted to buy a ticket for. Obviously these weren't the latest or most valuable, but many people go through these kinds of genres pretty quickly so were happy to get a whole basket full.
But a bigger money maker now is selling some of their donated books on line. Obviously, the donations are reviewed first for potential additions to the regular library collection, but if it's a duplicate and a little more valuable, it pays to use volunteers to post these for sale. I've heard it's been very successful.
Speaking as someone who WANTED to become a Friend of the Local Library, the best way to grow your group is to be inclusive. When I showed up, I tried to talk to at least 3 people who were cold, cut me off, and proceeded to talk to the rest of their clique. I felt extremely left out and never went back.
This is a common occurrence in a number of groups I've belonged to over the years. I usually try to go up to the people standing alone who look new and welcome them in, and introduce them to a couple of people to make them feel at ease. But a lot of club members just want to socialize with the people they already know, leaving newcomers standing in the corner alone.
It's good to have a couple of people whose official role is that of greeter, because sometimes people forget to reach out.
Our library is having a Chocolate Extravaganza as a fundraiser. I also like the idea of having a keurig coffee maker and pastries in a certain part of the library, proceeds & upkeep by friends. One brilliant idea that one of our friend's library did was to have the Friends Group purchase museum passes and in order to use them a family joins the Friends Group. Annual membership needs to be low $10 or so to be affordable. This grew their friends group quickly and they bought even more passes to various cultural institutions. Someone mentioned the "heads & tails" coin flip idea and the way to go is to try to break some kind of # limit for participants. Good luck!

Our Friends of the Library raises money these ways:
We have a used book sale every six months. People are encouraged to donate used books and they do! They usually are at the time of voting for the library budget and for the school budget in the fall. Donations are accepted and a group of us set the sale up. We can make over $10,000 in a five day sale.
There is a big bake sale during each book sale. This brings in several thousand dollars.
There is a candy/nut/cookbook table. Someone is in charge of ordering bags of candies and nuts and there is a group of cookbooks of members favorites that are printed up. They are sold by volunteers- it is staffed morning and afternoon shifts every day. This raises over $1000 each month.
What really helped our library is someone got on the board who knew how to find and write for grants. We have gotten two big grants in the past few years. One was for a big computer center.
The gift basket idea is a really good one. Our quilt guild did this at our last show and I was skeptical but it ended up being a huge moneymaker. And it isn't hard or expensive if a group of people get together for a theme basket. Think gourmet food basket, baking basket or gardening basket. For example a baking basket you can put a few bag of mixes, (or make those cookie in a jar mixes), and go to the dollar store to hunt up some wooden spoons, cookbook, potholder with a cookie cutter on the ribbon tie.
The friends has monthly programs, like a speaker who might talk about a book they wrote, an artist showing their work, a travel slideshow of Egypt etc. I went to one and everyone seemed so old to me I never went back. Not that I am a spring chicken but I don't feel old.

Good suggestions...we do some of these already but others are new and fresh and worth a shot...yes, our Friends group is quite white-haired and we'd love to attract a younger crowd--we may add a teenager to our Board if we could find an interested teen--we'd welcome their input...
Our Friends Group is very welcoming and inclusive and we're fun, I think, it's just hard to attract more members, especially active members, from our small community and during these challenging economic (and busy) times...with more budget cuts upcoming, we need to, though...

Most schools have what I irreverently think of as "forced volunteerism" now. Check with your local high school about getting interested students directly involved with your library system. They'll get some kind of credit for volunteering, and it will look good on college applications. I know at least a couple of high school students who would jump at the chance.

The library in our town has a chocolate bake off contest with judging. During some of the local craft fairs they sell homemade donated pies and at Christmas sell cookies for $8/pound. They have been doing this for a number of years so it must be profitable. They,too, have a used book sale yearly.
Our library raises the bulk of their money by running a book sale every weekend May through September. It a ton of work for the volunteers but it brings in the majority of their money. People from surrounding towns drive here to donate books because the library is so gracious about accepting donations. No sighs, no complaints, no eyerolls.

Our FOL group holds a city-wide garage sale. People pay a fee (I believe it is $15) to have their sale listed on the Official Map of sales, and get a sign saying that their yard sale supports the FOL. (Quite a few people don't pay the registration fee and have a sale anyway. Finks.) It is a fun event for the whole town.
They also have concert series. This was spearheaded by a local musician. It has been very successful.
They get so many book donations that they have an ongoing "Dollar a bag" book sale, rather than an annual one.
And our FOL group is also rather exclusive - they would get a lot more support if they were more welcoming.

Since I started the thread, I thought I should share one of our Friends' money makers with you. A number of years ago a special Friend built us a little red gypsy wagon bookmobile. It has shelves both inside and outside, the sides lift up for access.
For eight months of the year, on weekends, we tow it to our waterfront Main Street and sell books from it. It's very popular with locals and visitors alike. We live in a tourist town.
The book wagon is our main source of our annual Friends' budget. Volunteers staff it in two hour shifts. It's fun, we get to chat with people from all over and they get great deals on books. We stock it once a week and that's fun, too. We get first crack at the donated books. I just got a pristine copy of the South Beach Diet which I'd been looking for. Not bad for a $
Is it okay to bump this thread? We just instituted a new venture in our library. There was an empty space by the entrance way to our library that we turned into a Book Nook to sell our donated books year-round. A Friend built bookcases to fit the area, and another Friend donated a library table for special displays.
Not too much time is spent in labor to stock. Once a week we meet for a couple of hours to re-stock. We only separate hardbacks from soft covers and do not alphabetize by author or separate by subject categories. The librarian said she's noticed in previous book sales that more sales are made when patrons can browse for treasures.
There's an honor system locked money box for payments. Hardbacks sell for $2.00, soft covers for $1.00 and children's books for $.50, unless they're quite elaborate.
We displayed holiday books on the table for Christmas and classics for kids--perfect for stocking stuffers. The Book Nook project, so far, is in its infancy, but seems to be a steady money generator, and utilizes formerly unusable space, so everyone's pleased.
Just thought I'd share in case it might work for your Friends group, too.
Our FOL (family joke - we call it the Fiends of the Library) does the 'book nook' thing and twice-yearly book sales, all of which are popular. Happyhiker, I like the fact that you all do a bit of seasonal merchandizing with yours, and I'm going to pass along that idea, if I may.
The big fund-raiser is called "Club Lib"; the library is opened one night and converted into a night club. Every year has a different theme (last year, as the party was held around Halloween, the theme was "Here Comes the Mummies), and there's some great publicity for the library as well as $$$.

I think trivia nights are fun, and usually raise a ton of money. Kind of a natural for a library. Our library holds book sales every week. It's a very active library.

I have been wanting to actually start a Friends of the Library group (they're not too common here), so I'm reading this with interest!
Just for my understanding, how are Friends of the Library different than the library? I ask this because it could be that the friends provide the library for its resources or does the library do this themselves?
Our library started to apply for funds when we had concrete projects. We asked the RBC (bank in Canada) to donate money for young reader resources and they did. The McMurray foundation donated funds for Child Lifelong learning, a telecommunication company donated an electronic community board, etc.. It's hard for a library to just ask for money but as soon as you have a project the opportunities are a lot better I think.
But the beforementioned chocolate fundraisers run very well as well is my opinion. What about selling seeds in the spring (Plant a Seed for Literacy)? We did that in a mall in February and April and boy did they make a lot of money. People where sick of winter and the reminder of spring made them buy a lot of boxes with seed.
Friends of the Library organizations are usually 501c3 organizations; as a nonprofit organization, it's easier for them to raise money, either for special projects or to increase a library's endowment. It's entirely possible to donate straight to a library, but, as a taxpayer-funded organization, it's a little trickier for them to raise money independent of what the government allocates to them.

I have been ruminating on the teenager idea. I think it's a good idea, but wanted to raise some points that I think are worth consideration.
1) Perhaps rather than a lone teen on your board, think about starting a Young Friends group (or something much more creatively named) where the kids can bounce ideas off each other, create, etc. I was involved in some things with older people as a teen, and I didn't understand the workings of that type of group. I didn't know all the lingo or the procedures. I didn't get when to shut my mouth and when to let the ideas flow and when to realize that someone just had a stick up their a** - I just thought they didn't like me. I was in a curriculum group for the school district as a junior and was the student rep, but my dad was the parent rep. That worked really well, because I could ask him questions if I didn't understand something and didn't just have to feel dumb.
2) Be clear with the teen about expectations up front. Well, that's a good idea for anyone. Be clear that FoL is a fundraising group and that they will be expected to raise money or help with events that raise money.
3) Rather than a high schooler doing compulsory service, you might get better results with a college student looking for a meaningful internship. Either way, a young person is most likely going to require some mentoring for both the organization and the young person to get the most out of the experience.
4) I wonder how closely you can work with the library staff to determine what kind of teen initiatives they are working on? Do they have a teen advisory group already? Special teen "nooks" or computer areas? (There are some suuuuuuper cool ones, but I have to go eat dinner now . . . :) ) Perhaps young people would be more on board raising money for other young people or for children. Hard to say, just a thought.
Here it is! They say they have a line out the door WAITING for the library to open. Kids LINING UP, after school, to go to the library. Pretty freakin' awesome.
