We've posted a list of books about decluttering and "unstuffing" over at the FI website. For a lot of people (like me), it's just not simple: they may recognize they need to do it, but just can't make it over that first "hump." Several of the books tackle the emotional ties that keep us holding onto "stuff" long past when it should be gone, and "letting go." Personally, I find purging stuff very satisfying... I just can't get organized about it, so I get bogged down. Sigh.

So... anyone familiar with any of these books? Care to review, or share other resources or ideas?

How about Miss Minimalist's book? I haven't read it yet, but looks good and looks like it would fit. Plus, she's one of our own!

I am not sure if you want to start to go this route with the list, but hoarding is a real problem. However, it also seems like people think or fear that they are hoarders when they are not. I have read the book Stuff to better understand some family members. It is excellent.

Of the ones listed, I read the Clutter's Last Stand one a long time ago. I remember finding it helpful at the time but couldn't tell you just how right now, many years later.

The funny thing is that my venture into assembling the list started when I stumbled on Miss Minimalist's book on Amazon... all unaware! Too funny.

Hmmm... I like your suggestion about hoarding. I think it might be even more of a loaded question when one person wants to declutter and a family member wants to stay attached to the stuff. You'd easily start wondering if the attached one was maybe a bit of a hoarder, when they might not be at all. I'll have to check it out: thanks!!

(And I love your "20 questions" feature on your blog... I should get into that habit myself.)

I'm currently reading It's All Too Much by Peter Walsh. It might fit the bill for what you're looking for as it gives you concrete steps for "kickstarting" the decluttering process. He also goes through room by room to help figure out what should be and should not be in each room. Overall, very practical.

Thanks for thinking of me, fidgiegirl!

HKPassey, I'd be honored if you'd add my book to your list! (The title and link are in my signature). The Simple Living forums have been a huge inspiration to me. :)

Actually, you got your own page! Feel free to add to it, or suggest additions (if you have a nice jpg of the cover, for instance). I just added your blog URL and the info about the Best of 2010 (congratulations, btw!). I really did get started on this project when I found your book on Amazon, and didn't even know. Funny, yes??

Okay, Miss Minimalist, you just went on my list of favorite blogs with your "do without perfume" posts. Woohoo!

Oh, wow - now I'm *really* honored. {blush} Thank you so much!

I'd love to add my cover .jpg, but am not quite sure how to do it. Do I use the "Upload File" option? (My apologies for my cluelessness...)

Glad you liked the "no perfume" post - haven't touched the stuff in years. :)

On the photo, yes, you'd use the upload file option. Once it's uploaded (just make sure it isn't huge, lol), there are instructions listed on the site, or you can just let me know and I'll post it. (It's not hard, just fiddly. And someone pays me to do that stuff... lol.) Or, you can just email it to me at helen@financialintegrity.org and I'll take it from there. I'd love to get more images on the site. By the way, do you know about metadata in images? You can put your blog address, contact email, and keywords in there, and it can be picked up by search engines, giving you a bit of additional exposure everywhere online that you post it.
