View Full Version : What Have You Never Bought (New or Otherwise)?

I just bought a brand new refrigerator. My last one was bought 15 years ago second hand for $50. The one before that was second-hand for $75 and the one before that was my MIL's cast off from the basement. I have to admit my current one still runs, but the rubber seal is old and the door is showing mold. So, I bought a floor model $200 off, and I'm so excited!! I get it tomorrow.

On the same vein, when I was in vacation, my DD26 and my DS's girlfriend and I were talking, and they were saying they were thinking of getting a pedicure. I told them I had never had a pedicure in my whole life--well you would have thought I had said that didn't know what water was. They looked at each other and said, "We're GOING to take you to get a pedicure." I don't know--I just don't see spending money on pedicures, but that's just me.

So, at my old age (59), I bought myself my first refrigerator, and I STILL haven't had a pedicure!

What have you never bought new? Or never bought that someone would find incredulous?

Never bought a new car, only a whole string of greatly used ones. Someday I'd like to get one that's only a couple of years old. Haven't bought a new house and have no desire to. Never bought an animal from a breeder and I never will, only adopted "used" ones.

I remember how excited we were to buy our first new refrigerator 7 years ago, with help from "Uncle Adolf" (reparations money from the German gov't for stealing from my grandparents in 1934).

Last month, we bought our first-ever new toilets to replace our original-to-the-house ones (with a subsidy from the water company), and I was so excited to be the first one to ever sit on my new toilets, that I posted about it on facebook. :) The novelty hasn't even worn off yet (mostly because they work SO MUCH better than our old ones).

Well, catherine....I'll be 70 years old this winter, and I've never had a pedicure OR a manicure in my life. Somehow, if I add up the cost of all the pedicures I never had, no wonder our bank account is so healthy, hahahahaha......not to mention never having had a toe fungus, which seems common among friends and acquaintances who get regular pedicures......

Ya know.....I'm sure this isn't all that indicative, but I am AMAZED at the people who can barely make it from payday to payday, but sport professionally done artifical nails and "cute" little flowers painted on their big toes as part of their pedicure. Is there a connection?

There are so many things I've never bought, I don't think I could list them all. But......certainly have my own money sucks, so can't be TOO self righteous......I wouldn't like to add up what I've spent on books in my lifetime, nor traveling......so.......

Never had a pedicure or a manicure either. Never had a massage. Never bought or lived in a brand new house. Never had a brand new dog (puppy.)

Never have bought a hospital stay, a bicycle, curtains or draperies, or a wedding dress. I've not purchased a cell phone or any hand held device.

And yes I sure do see a connection between those who have cutesy crap on their nails and an inability to pay their bills (but for 4 year olds.)

I've never bought a new house, only used ones typically older that I was, though my current one was built the year I was born. So we both age gracefully together.

I've never bought a cell phone, any product from Apple, a cup of coffee or tea, a ticket to any sports event, golf clubs, tennis rackets, firearms, or chocolate cake or ice cream.

I've never gambled. Never really saw the point of it, although i think it would be fun to go to Las Vegas sometime. I've never had a pedicure either, although my sister keeps working on me insisting i really MUST have one at some point. I've never had a new refrigerator either. I've never had an i tunes, or i phone, i pad, or i-anything.

Never bought a brand new car, pedicure/manicure, cable TV, IPOD, NOOK or other electronic reading devices, went to Las Vegas for a whole week and didn't gamble, oh there are so many things I've never bought and the one time I splurged on a salon coloring I hated it and went home and redid it myself the next day.

Junkman, never bought a cup of coffee or tea or chocolate cake or ice cream?? You got me there!

Mrs-M: I don't think your list is depressing--I think it's a victory lap! (but I would think about a vacation at some point)

All you guys that got away without cells and Apple products, that's pretty amazing.

And FloatOn--in Las Vegas and never gambled? I guess that's like the time I spent the whole week at a family camp when I was 14--there was hiking, swimming, boating, ping-pong, and all kinds of other things and I sat on the porch all week reading Gone With the Wind (hadn't planned it that way--but bought the book to keep me occupied on the long drive up and literally couldn't put it down).

Cool responses!

Put a price next to each, add them up and look at how much debt you avoided. It could actually be a bit exciting :-)

Never bought a new car. Bought our first new television last Christmas. Before that we always used other people's cast-offs when they got the latest, greatest.

Never bought a new car or a new sofa (bought 2 used sofas in my life). Never bought a new TV, but did receive one as a gift. Our other set was dumpster dove. I have an ipad for work but I didn't buy it, does that count??? Probably not because now I am hooked!

I had not been to a casino until last year. I played a little just to say I had...I guess that messed me up for this thread.

I've gotten pedicures in the past, but this year I injured my toenail hiking so I didn't get any this summer and I though, hmmm that was pretty easy to live without.

Aside from the brand new house and brand new animal, I think I've purchased everything on everyone's list;)

However, we have zero debt and a very healthy savings account. So I must be doing something right!

What have I never purchased....hmmmm...

condoms

a boat

a cottage

a wedding dress (was knocked up and wore pants) but if you add up all the bridesmaid gowns (and accessories) I've been forced to purchase I could have bought a stellar wedding gown.

pay per view movie

call waiting, call display, call forward, call whatever

Catherine,

The other side of exclusions is, of course, inclusions. Books I buy by the armful, both new and used. That's an "unrestricted" item in my budget.

Other exclusions: I've never bought a high-end fly rod, for being able to build my own. I've never hired an arborist, painter, electrician, financial adviser, or tax-preparer for, again, being able to do my own work.

We've been in Las Vegas countless times and only gambled one time, and that was years ago, when we met my mother, who was living in FL at the time, in Las Vegas and she insisted on giving me a roll of quarters to play the slot machines, and then I had to sit there beside her and play until I could get rid of the money, make my excuses and go off to bed.

It took HOURS to lose that $10 of quarters.....I'd get down to the last half dozen or so, and WHAM.....I'd hit a winner and quarters would clang down into the drawer. I was SO relieved when that last quarter was gone.

Other than that, we eat, go to shows, walk, visit things.....(have done everything from watching marshmallows be made, toured the Mars candy factory, gone to the Liberace museum, watched them can Ocean Spray cranberry juice, hiked all over the hills around LV, gone to Hoover Dam, prowled the many thrift stores (three Savers, great ones, alone in Las Vegas), gone to the Pawn Stars tv show pawn shop, eaten Ethiopian food in a little dive where only the Ethiopian taxi drivers go....) the list is long, and I'd never waste any of that time gambling........

It helps that we have a relative by marriage who is a REALLY big deal at one of the casinos. He has spent his life in the casino business and his father before him, and he, together with a son who was a mathematician has taught me what a sucker really looks like.......

Plus, I walk in those casinos and a little voice says, "hmmm...wonder who paid for all this wretched excess?" and another voice inside goes...."Baaa...Baaaa....BAAAAA"........

If I found it fun, I'd do it, and just set aside a certain amount of money and consider it entertainment. But since I find it boring, don't even care if I win or not.....lots better things to do, IMHO.

Now, as Junkman said......don't even LOOK at how much money I've spent on books in my lifetime......

Or never bought that someone would find incredulous?

Never bought/owned or had: Manicure and pedicure. Facials, massages, or any kind of spa-type treatment. Hair cuts (sis trims hair). Home internet or cable. CD player or stereo (had a stereo as a kid that was a gift). CD's or DVD's (get free from library). Never had a car payment but have bought new cars with cash. Never had an on going debt on a credit card (or other debt except mortgage) since I always paid (or is that payed ;-)?) them off in full each month. Designer anything - clothes or shoes or purses. Netflicks or pay per view (i.e. nbo cable). Call waiting, call forwarding, etcc... just a basic pay as you go celll phone (no contract) for emergencies and a basic home phone. Oh and I'ver never had a 'smore...yet! Oh and I've never gambled in Vegas but have done some slots a few time in the big Indian Casino near my house. Never invested in the stock market or in mutual funds (but still retired at age 42). Never done any on-line shopping, banking or bill paying (no internet at home). Never did facebook or my life or any internet based social network. Never bought a pet - all were rescues. Never bought/owned an IPOD or I-anything.

I too have never had a pedicure or manicure. A co-worker gave me a gift certificate for 2 facials so I took my sister with me so we could each say we've had one at least once in our life. It was at an Aveda school and I got a shoulder and neck message along with the facial and no pressure to buy any products. My sister was hustled to the front and was pressured to buy as she waited for me - I got the better experience!

Never had call waiting or caller ID.

Haven't had cable in 15 years although all the kids at school can't believe that I "just don't call and give my credit card number".

Ditto the mani/pedi thing... let's see.... no new cars, crack cocaine or heroin, no new furniture - always traded, used, Goodwill or Craigslist (and I have some very cool stuff...), ummm... that's all I can think of!

Too many things to list! I've always rented furnished apartments, so I've never bought a couch, coffee table, fridge, stove, kitchen nor bathroom set, washing machine, bed, wardrobe...

I've also never bought a car, but mainly because it would probably eat up about 25% of my income!

Sheepishly admitting that I've bought just about everything previously mentioned, with many of them multiple times.

Although, I'm proud to say that I've never bought a carbon offset, a politician or other influence. Never bought a lottery ticket or any other form of gambling (well, after losing an entire paycheck in a barracks blackjack game nearly 40 years ago). Over the last decade or so, I've never bought a loan. No jewelry other than a wedding ring. Never bought a hat or a hooker or an illegal drug. I've never bought forgiveness, or blessings or an energy drink. I've also never bought a movie or a music download or a better smile. Many years ago, I considered a pet rock, but never went through with it.

Pretty much everything else though.

I'm not a gadget person, so I don't have a yogurt maker, blender, fancy $350 mixer, etc. I do have and use a Magic Bullet, though. Our son travels extensively, so we have a lot of his stuff here, including a bread machine that I've used a couple times...and don't like.

I also like living on the cutting edge of low technology, so I don't have a Smart phone, Ipod, etc.

Power tools are a different thing, though. We bought a drywall gun that flies through strips of screws since we're hanging an entire house with drywall. Bought two framing nailers, one for DH, one for me, when we started building the house, roofing nailer, etc, etc. And we have no problem loaning them to friends and family.

Other than buying the tools necessary to make the construction go easier, I tend not to buy 'stuff'. I'm tired of 'stuff' and always look for alternative ways of doing things.

I've never bought a:

- pet turtle
- mandolin
- cricket set
- derivative
- rubber chicken
- colonic
- unicycle
- nose ring

What it is supposed to be things everyone buys? Doesn't it seem to you like everyone else owns at least one madolin? I continually have to remind myself that I am not in competition with the Joneses over who has the most madolins.

Perhaps people buy these and I never have:
- cable tv
- anything at WalMart
- pedicures/manicures (although I never thought of it before this thread)
- new cars
- i-gagets or smartphones

Mrs-M take a vacation and get a good Swedish massage while you're there! The rest is just stuff :)

Never bought a car (new or used). Never bought a house.

Didn't buy a tv until I was 33 years old. I actually bought my first computer (one of the first generation iMacs) 2 years before that.
