View Full Version : Kids trample each other to get new Michael Jordan shoes.
This is really sad (and disgusting). I turned on the news to see if the world was still out there, and the first topic was the stampede at shoe stores carrying the new Michael Jordan shoe. One young girl was interviewed and she said "Yeah, people got pushed down on the floor, and we just jumped over them. We got the shoes. Now we cool. We good.
Its just disgusting. I guess these shoes are around $190. These people did not look like this is what they should be spending their money on. And someone else will probably beat them up to steal them off their feet. :(
Kids do what they see their parents do. Most "adults" in this country will lie, cheat, steal, and backstab to get ahead at work because this is how we've been trained by an economy based on ever-increasing growth and personal acquisition.
I share your disgust, but the only thing I know of to do is be an example of another, better way of living. :(
I was not happy to see that one of these happened in my city. How bizarre our culture is becoming when so many find their meaning in stuff. Of course, the media loves these kind of stories too. I think I will do a media purge in the New Year.
The Seattle police even pepper sprayed these Occupy Nike hooligans.
Count me in also in sharing the same disgust. Sickening.

"Kids" is sometimes used in news stories as a codeword for "teenage and 20-something hooligans".
I guess it happened in most of the malls in the city near here.
At one mall, they broke the entrance door down. They interviewed a lady who bought a pair of the shoes and the guy asked her "Was it
worth getting trampled". She said "If it makes my nephews happy, then it was work getting trampled to get them what they need."
Right......they needed $180 tennis shoes. Some malls had security escorting customers with the new shoes to their cars, in case they were
targets. Not many of these people looked like they could even afford spending money like that on shoes.
They showed clothes and shoes all over the ground........where people had just taken off their old shoes and left them.
What the hell is happening to our country???

I saw that this morning and thought how sad it was that people wanted those shoes that bad! Crazy! It did remind me of the 80's Cabbage Patch doll craze - I was at a store back in the day that had just received a shipment and the outrageously bad behavior shown by parents trying to secure one of these dolls was beyond anything I had ever seen - SAD!

Every year there is a must-have item (or several) that generate this kind of reaction and this kind of press. I choose to believe that the extreme people involved in this kind of happening are an extreme minority in our society. There are, after all, 300 million of us in this nation, and most of us don't give a rat's *** about these tennis shoes. Merry christmas anyway!!! Glad we're not them!!!

One guy bought baby Nike's......"for my son........who I don't have yet, but when I do, he'll have these for baby shoes".
Shots were fired in one crowd, young kids were trampled, mall doors broken, police used pepper spray at one site to control the crowds. I know I should just turn the news off, but I feel like I need to know what's going on around me.
How can we stop this kind of crap? Education doesn't seem to work. The biggest school system around has so much trouble. The kids don't get any support at home. the parents don't even seem interested that their kids get an education. What's the answer? Seems like these crowds of uncontrollable people are getting more and more numerous. Poor, uneducated. What's the answer?
Spending $190 on shoes, when you can't pay your bills. I just don't get it............

It's sad really. They place their value on what they own, rather than who they are. The kids feel that they "need" these shoes in order to be accepted, to fit in and to present themselves in a way that gives them some esteem.
I know I should just turn the news off, but I feel like I need to know what's going on around me.
Yes, but this is not what's going on around you. This is something that's happening in a few spots in the country, far outside your sphere of influence, and artificially skewing your opinion of people in general based on the actions & values of a very few.
Worse, it's what's being reported to you by a news media that knows you will be "hooked" by this story and react in exactly the way you're reacting, so you'll tune back in for more "news" again and again, and buy their advertisers' products. People everywhere are being manipulated by this into feeling bad about humanity.
In fact, all over the country there are celebrations of love and light. There are "stampedes" of people dressed up as Santa and giving away gifts and candy. There are people standing in long lines in my county to GIVE gifts to those who cannot afford them this year, ordinary people stepping up to take care of their families, friends and neighbors in this terrible economic time. My community has kept a small, beloved local business afloat despite a devastating medical disaster in the owner's family -- through grassroots fundraising and other kinds of support.
That NEWS is much more worthy of my time than anything the mainstream media cares to report. Know what I mean? I'm sure it's the same where you are --- the really terrible stuff gets the news coverage and ruins our entire day. The beautiful stuff goes completely unreported.
I feel bad for those who take the $200 Sneaker Path. But they are outnumbered a million-fold by good people.

How funny. I went to the liquor store yesterday for a bottle of wine at about 11 am. there were half a dozen people in line and someone actually tried to sneak to the front. The cashier said loudly " you must have not seen the line over there, those people have been waiting so I have to check them out before you." She sheepishly went to the end of the line.
The grocery store was a zoo, I fortunately didn't need anything anywere else so just went home and enjoyed the day.
Back to the OP, I have no idea what triggers this craziness. There were videos of people out on the day after Thanksgiving trying to snatch the "steals".
Life is so short, how sad it must be to feel like this is the way to live a life.

I can't even begin to comprehend this. Before I left for the North Rim of the Grand Canyon this summer, there used to be a Salvation Army down the street from me where I bought my shoes dirt cheap for years - It closed over the summer unfortunately. Point being though, I have been spoiled by buying almost new men's shoes for 3 to 5 dollars a pair.....This summer when I was in Flagstaff for a weekend I bought a pair of shoes for 9.99 at a thrift shop - a bit of a leap for me, and was stunned to see them at Dillard's for 89.99 - yikes for a pair of shoes! Are they plated in gold or something? But $180 for a pair of shoes - WTF??? Do these people want to work their whole lives through? Seriously, does it not dawn on any of these people, spending money like that on stuff = being more vulnerable to a rapidly changing and shrinking economy? I just don't get it.....Rob
