Perhaps I don't fully understand the issues but it seems that Google is supposed to combine all the personal info that they glean from our (yours and mine) communications whether gmail, Facebook etc and make the info available to those advertisers who purchase access to the Google system. This will come into effect on March 1st and each of us has to sign agreement with their authority to do so if we wish to use Google media in some form or other.
:help:
Am I understanding the issues correctly?
If I switched from gmail to Yahoo mail, will I avoid the privacy problem?
What other search engines are as good or more private?
What else should I be considering?

As a user of Google Apps, I received email notification of their new privacy policy yesterday. You can see info on it here.

http://www.google.com/policies/

There's lots of info there if you follow the relevant links.

One could spend a lot of time checking this all out. Thanks, Alan. I limit my use of the internet to Google search and gmail so checked them out for info.
I have to look further into the ad limitation options.

Here's an article I read yesterday about it - http://gizmodo.com/5879163/how-will-googles-new-privacy-policy-affect-you

It doesn't appear much is changing except now Google is combining all the data that they already gather about you across their services. I don't believe the data is ever shared directly with advertisers, but it is used to shape the ads you see on gmail and google.com

I too use G-apps, and really like them. Our board & staff range all over the country, and we share allour docs on G-docs. It is so much simpler, especially with spreadsheets, to have all looking at the same doc in realtime during a meeting, rather than sorting out which version of what budget or policy has made the rounds.

I'm slowly making my way through the new G policies.
