View Full Version : bypass versus anvil loppers?

I need to buy some more loppers. I'm looking at Fiskars power ones, so I won't have to work as hard. But I can't decide which type........bypass or anvil? I'm thinking if I want it mostly for tree branches, maybe the bypass would be better?
What's your experience?

For trees, to get that nice healthy-for-the-tree collar cut, I always use anvil loppers, but that's just me! I have friends who use the other ones and their trees aren't dead yet. :)

By pass is a cleaner cut. The anvil crushes the branch against the anvil, thus it's name. But, as puglogic, it's really a matter of personal preference.

Bypass here for no real reason other than that is what I bought years ago and haven't needed to replace them yet. Like peggy said, its a nice, clean cut.

I use the anvil loppers for clearing brush I want to die anyways, and the bypass loppers for working on plants I like.

I find the bypass style needs more finesse in operation, especially on the gnarly stringy brush we have around here, while you can just Conan the anvil style when you need to.

I use the Kaiser blade on plants I really really don't like :-)

Well, the Kaiser blade would also come in handy if mounted knights from Lopez Island attacked, so it is in some ways a more versatile implement :-)

Not sure it makes too much difference whether bypass or anvil; it's more important that they be compound loppers that can cut bigger branches with mechanical advantage.

Bypass, is all we have ever used, and with great success may I add. Fiskars, all the way!
