View Full Version : Huge ice storm coming :(

We're supposed to get a big ice storm from Monday night to Wednesday night. They're saying more than an inch of ice. We had damage to most of our 33 acres of trees with much less ice than that awhile back. Then it takes all summer to clean it up.
I'm bummed. If we lose power, which we probably will, the chickens won't have their heat lamps when it drops to zero, and my deicers in the water gardens won't work and the tadpoles and frogs will die. Hopefully when the trees break, they don't break out house.
We have tons of huge white pine that break so easily under ice. I feel like taking xanax and closing all the drapes for a week or 2. If you're in a warmer area.........please blow some hot air in this direction!

Ugh! I'm sorry. We get ice storms here in Iowa, too, and they are awful. I was feeling hopeful for spring, but we have up to 18-22 inches of snow coming our way. Ick! I hope you and all of your little critters stay safe and warm!

One forcast has us getting up to 1.8" ice before the snow starts. I hadn't even thought about my chickens yet.....

Just as an aside.......this is why I found it unbelievable that Indianapolis got the Super Bowl next year. What a chance to take with Indiana weather!

I'm not looking forward to this mess of a storm, either. Ice and then up to 18 inches of snow, depending on which forecast you watch and exactly where the front ends up moving. A bit one way and we'll be getting a foot. Shift a little the other way and we're looking at a foot and a half. Blah!

Everything outside is ready. There isn't much more I can do to prep. I've got winter gear in the car, just in case. I only have to drive a few miles and could walk home (though it would be cold) from work if absolutely necessary. It would probably take 3 hours in winter ice, though.

Wow, those pictures are amazing, Storyteller. I hope the recovery for the in-town property wasn't too painful.

We're forecasted to get the ice storm too, but it's not expected to be anything like what people to the west of us will get. And I don't have chickens to worry about. Hunker down, folks!

They should have it in Dallas in the the Jerrydome ever year.

Those pictures Storyteller, look just like our entire 33 acres looked in 1991 and close to that again around 1995. It just breaks my heart to look at our property after an ice storm. (Not to mention the worked involved just to clean up around the area around the house/coop/garden.) I love white pines, but they suffer so horribly with ice. And I'm sure we won't have heat or lights. We have a fire place, but our house is so open that it doesn't help much. We should have gotten a kerosene heater. We have a generator and will probably use that just for the freezer. I try to comfort myself by saying that nature knows what its doing and my plans are irrelevant. But I've planted hundreds of trees here and its hard seeing them fall. Hopefully, it won't be as bad as they are saying. They've been wrong most of the time this winter, but I have the feeling they might be right this time. One winter, during an ice storm, during the night we could hear ice-covered trees falling and crashing. It sounds just like glass breaking.
About the superbowl.........I just can't believe they gave it to Indianapolis. Our weather around this time of year is sooooo unpredictable. Silly people.

Indy got it because of its experience over the many years with large sports events. Remembering that there may not be a Super Bowl to go to next year.

wait--why wouldn't there be a Superbowl?

I think it has something to do with a potential lockout.......whatever that is. Was that the right word?

Amazing pics, Storyteller! We experienced a bad ice storm in 2004. Had no power for over a week. It was tough to get through, we were freezing, exhausted from keeping a fire going 24/7, and hungry. It was so hard on our trees too. :-(

Now we are getting some ice tonight and are in the path of the blizzard due to arrive in a few short hours - we may get anywhere from 13 to 24 inches of snow. I'm just hoping that the power stays on. That makes the whole thing alot more bearable....
