How much salt is too much salt?

I'm wondering about all this salt that so much of the country is throwing down everywhere because of this exceptionally snowy/icy winter. I know its not good for plants/trees/bushes. some of the big box stores in a nearby city are selling out of it every day, and one store said they get 3 semis of it at a time.
Just wondering what effects all this salt will have on everything??
