Here's some photos of a place I am hoping to rent (just did the application). It costs less then a tiny studio or one bedroom apt in the area I current am living. Comes fully furnished too and is right in the village close to the lake and ski resorts. Sorry they are so big but I don't know how to make them smaller

It is too big for me too but I'll be sharing it with my sister part time as she only has a 3 day work week so will be up the other days to ski - as well as lots of visiting friends. For myself I'd rather just have a tiny 400 sf one room cabin but this place (and other larger places I looked at) weren't much more expensive then the small places.

Well it's actually at the end of a road and only a few cabins (all very different from each other) close to that cabin. Has a big back yard with a view of a meadow. But yeah, like most of the places there, it's pretty packed in since it's in a valley surrounded by mountains and Nat Forest. Pretty densely populated.
This is lovely, I especially like the woodstove in the kitchen, very cozy to walk into after a day skiing.

Well it's not mine yet (at least not until Nov 11th) so I'm still looking. I'm spending today indoors checking out places on line (good for a rainy day activity) and will go up this weekend to look at more place. Have a million photos of many places too. Lots and lots available this time of year. That place is a bit too big for me (around 1200 sf so not really that big - and no garage or storage) but it's cute (if you like a place that looks like a forest threw up in it - i do!!) and in a great location.

Ha Ha - probably just for the winter as I don't like travelling in the winter - dark to early, iffy weather. And of course I can still "play" since I love to ski and do all sorts of winter sports! And I am only a 90 minute drive from my sisters house by the beach so can drop off the little yapper (my dog) anytime and take off for a couple of weeks or so. Can't tie me down THAT easily ya know :-)!

Just lovely. I looked at a cabin in Frazier Park that was was gorgeous. There are some excellent prices there, too. Big Bear is nicer, though. It has all the skiing.

And the big lake too. It's a bit of a drive getting up there (very windy roads where you often needs chains in winter) but I don't need to do that drive everyday like some commuters do. YIKES can't imagine doing THAT commute to work each day. Of course there aren't any jobs up there except low paying resort type jobs, and it's crowed with tons of little vacation cabins as well as giant mansion houses (popular place with hollywood types) but, as a single woman, I like being more in a city and would hate to be off in the country far from civilization.
Here's the interior photo of the one with the snowy mountain view from above. Nice huge fireplace but too big for me and those huge windows mean too high of heating bills!

Hey Jane, even the fanciest places up there come with antlers :-)! This is the entrance of a "cabin" for rent there. Talk about "cabin porn" - YIKES
My house has aspects of that last one--cedar, stone fireplace, massive windows, wraparound deck, similar--but not as grand--view.

I'll just come live with you then - you do cook right :-)! I don't know about that last place - I'm getting pretty fancy in my old age. And of course I must impress all my up-scale friends from "The O.C." (NOT!!). Since the average rental price for a fully furnished cabins up there is between $500 - $1000/month - a bit more for the one with a view above ($1275 I think but it's got 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a 2 car garage)and the one with the fancy entryway is $4500/month I guess I'll be passing on that. But you should see some of those places - pretty dern spectacular.
Oh man -- you've hit my weak spot! All of those look lovely in their own way (even, maybe especially the tiny one). Hmmmm, maybe we need to put Big Bear on our potential relocation list. If only the family wasn't in Seattle....

I really like it, Spartana! I'm one that likes to play pool too, so wouldn't mind having that pool table!
DH and I stayed in a cabin very similar to that one, but much smaller I think, in Estes, Colorado, for a week. We loved it so much! I would have liked to stay there permanently....

Well I would chose Seattle (anywhere in western Washington) over Big Bear any day but it's not a bad place to live if you need to be in SoCAl. Too small of a town fo the long term for this city-girl but somehow I'll muddle thru somehow :-)
I got a place there yesterday but none of the ones in the photos. I ened up getting a very cute 3 bedroom/2 bath approx. 1,000 sf chalet style cabin with a big deck (with a partial lake view but full mountain view) close to everything - town, lake, skiing, hiking trails, Nat Forest, etc... Will post photos soon. Had to come back to sister's to get the dog and my clothes - the only thing I need to move in!

No photos yet but here's a couple of "old" cabin porn photos. There are a lot of government lease cabins up here and most are original from the late 1800's during the gold rush they had here (lots of old gold mines everywhere). The cabins are on National forest land which surrounds the town/valley and have been modernized for the most part but some are in original condition.
Ooh, I like! My cabin only has a view of a field and treeline. This is so gorgeous!
My place doesn't have a big lake view either and it's a newer place - early 1960's I think - but these old places are very cool and very historic. This area is very unusual in that there are only 6,000 permanent residents (about 12,000 in the whole valley) but like any resort town there are a million vacation cabins everywhere - and being it's a 4-season resort area, tons of people visiting - mostly on weekend in summer and winter. You'll find a tiny original 1860's handmade log cabin next to a giant mansion house next to a ski chalet next to a geodomne place. Very mis-mashy but fun to walk around and look at places. There is a cute touristy village area, some of the big box stores and many many other stores and restaurants nearby, a huge preforming arts center, a huge nature center, a solar observatory, paved bike paths, golf course, wildlife zoo, and numerous hiking, mountain biking and X-country ski trails everywhere (including the Pacific Crest trail that goes from Mexico to Canada). And of course, 2 big snow ski resorts. All surrounded by thousands of acres of Nation Forest. So it's kind of like living in a small city in that everything you need is here and withing walking or biking distance (they even have a great bus system) but you are still close to the wilderness areas and also country stuff like big horse ranches, etc...

And antler-free! well, at least on the outside. Yep, I've been there since mid month. Only staying there for a short time though as it's just a month to month vacation rental but it gives me a chance to decide if I want to move back up there permanently again (rent or buy) or if I want to try to travel with the Barkinator again come spring.

Your photos are making me want to look for a cabin to purchase up there. I have my house on the market. It looks so beautiful, reminds me of Lake Tahoe. Are any of the historic cabins for sale? Those are totally my style...

Ha Ha I actually made that suggestion to you in another thread (can't remember where exactly) and will try to find my agents website - called Blue Skies Realty www.bigbearlakerealestate.com and you can try www.realtor.com too but do advanced search to include some other areas nearby - as they have lots of sales, rentals, and government lease cabin info. There's quite a few historic cabin from the late 1880's but they are government lease cabins on National Forest land. Not sure how it works but I think you pay for a 30 year lease (prices are about the same as to buy a cabin in town) and can sell it at any time but you don't actually own it - just lease it.
There are lots of other cabins from the 1920's too. But it's not a place where you have a large amount of land and space between homes. It's in a small valley surrounded by National Forest and steep mountains on all sides with the lake and town in the center. Not much room to sprawl (which is nice) but that means everything is very densely packed in. Most affordable homes are on small lots. There are some areas further east that have acreage and are fairly spread out but they are expensive and not in the forested area. Also they are at a higher altitude (over 8,000 ft) so are colder and snowier. There are also some great places on the quieter, less populated North Shore.

Hey Awakenedsoul - come on up to Big Bear Lake! Housing prices are cheap (for SoCal) and I think it;s much nicer thasn Frazier Park. Of course it's a pain in the butt to get up and down the mountain, especially in winter as you often need chains even with snow tires and 4 wheel drive, but if you don't have to work - or are OK with working a seasonal or resort industry job - then it's a good place. Of course the winter's are rough (very cold and can be snowy) and there are issues with wildfires too, and lots of second homes and visiting people - can get very crowded on summer and winter weekends - but otherwise it's not a bad place if you want to live in SoCal.
But I would recommend that before you decide to sell your place and move elsewhere (or after you sell your place) that you rent in the area for awhile before you decide to buy. That's especially important if you are going to a new area or one that has a climate you aren't familair with - like Washington, Oregon or even a mountain town like Big Bear. That way you can try it before making any long term financial commitments, or paying out alot of money to sell your place and buy another. There are lots of off season furnished, all untilities and everything included, vacation rentals that will rent cheaply by the month. So you could try rent a place somewhere in an area you'd like to live (say Washington) in mid-winter and give it a try before taking the plunge. If you didn't like it then you are free to leave - either to go back to your house if you haven't sold it yet, or to another vacation rental somewhere else that you may like.
Other things to consider too are how old are your parents and do you want to be far away from them? Also property taxes in other places aren't capped like Califs are so they could get raised higher at anytime. But if you move out of state to a much less expensive place - or to a less expensive part of Calif - then taxes may not be that big a deal. Personally I'd move to someplace liker Oregon or Washington (preferably Washington but Oregon is drier and warmer - especially along the I-5 corridor towns) rather than stay in Calif (especially SoCal) but parents, familiy and friends, etc... may mean you want to stay in this area. So if that's the case you can probably find a great deal housing-wise if you can move out of the city area.

I actually found an REO in PIne Mountain that just dropped in price to $80,000. It's really beautiful. It's on a 13,000 suare foot lot with stunning views. The neighborhood is incredible. It's in a cul de sac with only two other homes. They are both vacation homes. I think I could decorate it and make it a beautiful space. Big Bear sounds enticing, too! Maybe I will try renting something there like you suggested...I went there a couple of times with my ex, and I loved it.
