This looks so nice and easy, wonder if you could add things like herbs etc. to the oil without starting a fire? The nice thing is that olive oil does not smoke and you can use expired olive oil...they say you can use dry or regular herbs but I'm wondering, what do you think?

Here is how to make the oil candle:

A variation of the button candle. Does it have to be olive oil.

Hi Tiam, it said on the site that olive oil is the only one that will not smoke...:)

What is the button candle? Have never heard of that before...

Ah, well the site is called Little House Living. I remember in the Little House books, they are out of everything, including kerosene and candles. So, Ma made a Button Candle. She wrapped a square of fabric around a button and tied it off tight on one side. She dropped this on top of a cup filled with grease in it and lit it for light. I don't think it made the best light, but as in all the little house books, they are very grateful for it and for Ma's ingenuity. http://simplyhomemaking60.blogspot.com/2010/03/button-lamp.htmlhttp://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xqRPK3jrqSo/S43NhWONGCI/AAAAAAAAAa8/fRfO4Ejjaxw/s320/Button+lamp+001.JPG

Thanks Tiam! What a cute idea although I wonder how long it would stay lit. I think with the olive oil one she was looking to Chang the wick size to give more light, think she mentioned a lantern sized wick...:)

Yes, indeedy. I just feel the button lantern is her inspiration.

So neat!

For sure, dry or regular herbs would work IMO. Love the sounds of cinnamon, lemon, black pepper, allspice, and clove!

The button-candle is super neat, too!

You could use essential oils. I'm not comfortable using oil or kerosene lights here in earthquake county, but dd and I melt down wax (from honeycombs, old candles, broken crayons) and make our own candles (usually adding essential oils. We use a lot of pine; I love bayberry but it's fairly pricey.)

Garderarian, as a tradition in my family my Grandmother used to burn bayberry candles on Christmas Eve for good luck. I like the idea of just adding it to the oil. I especially love essential oils so think it would be nice at Christmas time to have either the pine or orange with clove mixture.

Mrs. M do think that regular herbs would be good or wonder if a cut off piece of holly or a pine branch would still be safe... They might be too inflammable...

The orange/clove scent sounds delightful!

Excellent point, Tussie, Re: the flammability of dried arrangements being added. I'm thinking one could add just the needles, to give that Christmas tree scent.

What a lovely idea, melting down an arrangement of things for candles, Gardenarian!
