I don't know why this hasn't received worldwide attention.
Even if it doesn't have much net benefit costwise, just emptying the garbage bins and landfills of plastic and creating a culture where plastic is carefully collected and recycled, will go a long way to cleaning up the environment. I'm sure with efficiencies of scale, this process could have net cost benefit anyway.
The video is fascinating, especially the part where the Japenese man stuffs his machine with regular plastic waste.
