Just think of all the thousands (if not more) houses that were damaged or destroyed.........stuff from inside the houses and outside.....garages, boats, toys, gardening stuff, furniture, bedding, kitchens.......now its all mixed in with sand. And where will all that sand go, now that its 'contaminated'?
Will there be any attempt to salvage wood, metal, etc?
What a mess.

You know, i always wonder this myself after these huge disasters. Think about the tsunami in Japan and all that stuff. I know a lot of it is floating around in the ocean, but so much is just piled up.

I think it goes to landfills. I think most of the sand will go back on the beaches.

The number one filler of landfills is construction waste, not diapers like most people think.

I think bunny has it wright. When I take our trash to the local transfer station while I am putting my 2 or 3 bags of trash into the pit a guy will back up his truck and put in a whole truck load of construction site waste material into the pit.

Hope that link works. It's a pdf with a lot details about what was done after hurricane katrina. This question has been in my mind often.

Getting a 404 on the links. Are you saying the stuff will be burnt? That's pretty nasty! Though I don't know as landfills are better. There's not a great solution, except reusing as much as possible. That takes more time and possibly money than is likely to happen though.

Edit the link: (other one works)
http://www.policyarchive.org/handle/10207/2863 After that is what I think causes it to go bad.
