The American Dream is not only my dream, but my reality as well.

The American Dream is a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_mobility) achieved through hard work. In the definition of the American Dream by James Truslow Adams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Truslow_Adams) in 1931, "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_class) or circumstances of birth.

The American Dream is not only my dream, but my reality as well.

The American Dream may have been like that when this was written, and if it were still so I would agree, but it has mutated into a cancer in the eyes of many now. The huge house for two tiny people, the five-car garage, the hundred-hour-a-week job leading to the heart attack at 50, the endless stream of throwaway electronic gadgets, the thousand-dollar Christmases, the wastefulness just because we can afford it, the postponement of our real passions until that mythical Retirement, and worst of all, the death of compassion whenever it interferes with our ability to make more and more and more money.

My dream is a simple, honorable, compassionate, and yes, prosperous life I build through hard work and cooperation. That's why that poster goes on my wall, not someone else's -- because it fits me. I guess we all have a right to our own dreams.

My husband gave me a dressing-down about this, and I have to admit he's right: For many people, like new immigrants, the dream of being able to live safely, possibly own your own home, work toward greater security financially, and participate in a democratic society is a very admirable one. I think I'm reacting to how bloated and ugly that's gotten for some, where nothing is ever enough, and more and more money/stuff/status is needed to feel like you've had a good life. Kudos to mr. pug for setting me straight.
