I am reaslly working on my Spanish but actually quite shy. I am worried that I won't understand when a person starts talking. So i wanted to watch movies, that sounds great. I think I have more in common here with people for taste in movies than the general population. i do not want soap operas or even the news.

So far i have watched Pan's Laybrynth many times and Motorcycle Diaries once. I really like them both. Any other suggestions that are kinda intellectual or artsy films? I really do not want the Big Mama's House of Spanish movies,!!!!

Pan's Labyrinth is brilliant, just stunning.

Y Tu Mamá También- coming of age story about two young men in Mexico

Maria Full of Grace - about a young woman who runs drugs across the border

I liked both of these.

Biutiful is about a man who has cancer and who wants to get his kid settled before he dies. I didn't like it that much, but it got critical acclaim. Stay away from Amores Perros, there is dog abuse.

This link gives the list of foreign films that were nominated for an Academy award.

I can't say that I recognize much on it. I like foreign films but don't watch much from south of the border.

Loved Motorcycle Diaries AND Pan's Labyrinth.

I liked Volver and Talk to Her quite a lot....that's Castillian Spanish but still interesting films. Same for The Sea Inside, which is a really terrific movie with Javier Bardem, who disappears so completely inside his character he's scary.

When I want to practice with no pressure, I watch Plaza Sesamo :D

http://www.learner.org/series/destinos/ It is slow as the primary focus is teaching the audience Spanish. However, it is also a soap opera type telenovela.
