I teach at a local university in an urban area. A small group of us recently got permission to develop a garden on the footprint of some former green houses on the campus. The area is fenced, has access to water, and sits in direct sun. It measures about 45 X 50 feet, has ramp access, is surrounded by cement, blacktop, and is surely just a heat sink in normal (northeast) summer sun. We want to focus primarily on a container and/or vertical food garden, hoping to demonstrate how it is possible to introduce some greenspace, and grow even a small amount of one's food if you live in an apartment in the city; where no designated garden land might be available to you.

I'd be grateful for any thoughts or stories of experiences from anyone who has done a smiliar project. Thanks
