View Full Version : PetSmart cooked the dog--tragedy

Someone in our dog club lost their bulldog to heatstroke, a new champion. The dog died at PetSmart where he had just been groomed. It was 32 degrees Farenheit that day, not exactly warm. Its a bulldog and they easily get overheated, but--he was a good breather, he was calm, he had been there before--all indicators that something was amiss in their handling of this dog.

The dog's temperature was 107 degrees and my friend theorizes that the dog had been hotter even and by the time the onsite vet took his temp he had cooled down. She thinks they put him in a metal crate and turned a dryer on him.

This dog just finished his championship, and at the awards dinner his family was very subdued. It was so sad to see them accept his award plaque.

Some PetSmart heads should roll for this idiocy.

I'm thinking a new name is in order, "NotTooSmart"! How utterly sad. I'm an animal lover through and through and this upsets me real bad.

That is a tragedy! It's hard to believe no one could hear the cries of a dog in distress. How sad for all involved, and obviously due to someone's carelessness.

yes! That's a good one. Also "PetStupid" would be appropriate."

Using cage dryers is pretty common and not everyone realizes how careful you have to be with brachycephalic breeds. It's really too bad. Hopefully they change their protocol at the groomer to prevent more deaths.

I'm really sorry for your friend's loss, and this is a good thing to consider when having your dog groomed anywhere. Thanks.

Petsmart and Petco are notorious for cruelty to animals. I don't buy anything from them because of that.

Hi Shalom! I made a promise to myself earlier on (tonight) that I would not drop by for another visit here this evening, but as you can see my level of willpower is pathetic! >8)

Anyhow, I'm so glad I did drop-by because when I read your post I laughed until I cried! :laff: I needed that laugh so bad!!! Thanks Shalom!!!!! :)

I work every week at a cat rescue. Petsmart allows us to use their facilities and Petsmart donates money for every cat we adopt while at their store.

The org is Happy Tails in Sacramento. I have cats for adoption at the Petsmart in Sacramento at the intersection of Watt ave and Arden. Every Sunday.

Perhaps Petsmart needs to get more on top of their groomers, however supporting community nonprofit rescue organizations does not sound like cruelty to me.

Petsmarts support is instrumental to my rescue org's operations.

Please let us know the location of the offending store so that we can assign some credibility to your anonymous, vague and non-verifiable claim. I agree it would be important for folks with dogs to avoid grooming there if they are overheating any dogs anywhere.

It was one of the St. Louis metro stores. I don't know which one.

I think maybe you are thinking of Petland - they do have a bad reputation.

Both of my DDs worked part-time at Petsmart when they were teenagers, and we all helped with the cat adoption program there. None of us ever witnessed any cruelty to animals in a period of several years.

I know a nice couple who took their 2 pugs to an independent professional groomer in town. The poor little guys also overheated in the blow dry crate and died. Certain breeds like bulldogs and pugs simply overheat quite easily and should never be subjected to extreme heat for any length of time. You would think any groomer would know that. My friends were devestated and I was so sad for them. I will never take my pug to any groomer now - I just don't trust that he will be safe there.

Iris Lily, I am so sorry to hear this happened to the poor bulldog. His owners are in my thoughts and prayers. :(

I know, when we kennel our dogs we take them to one owned by our bulldog friends (and drive an hour+ each way) rather than going to closer kennels because we know that they will watch for special conditions that will affect the bulldogs. If the air conditioning goes out, they'll get them to the collest place, etc.

Our two dogs are occasionally groomed at Petsmart because they love their groomer, who works there. (They won't behave for anyone else.) I specify that the pug is not to be dried with a blow-dryer. It's a terrible shame that this particular store had poorly trained staff and it resulted in the death of a dog, and if I were the dog's owner I would be pursuing the case with the energy of ten puglogics. But I've not heard of this being a pattern in the chain, and so hesitate to demonize the entire business as cruel.

DH and I are dog sitting his daughter's dog long term... She was shamed into buying pet insurance with Banfield the vet clinics assocated with Petsmart here in the Pacific Northwest... They made her feel somehow not a resposible pet owner if she didn't... I have had absolutely nothing but trouble every. damn. time. I have taken her dog there What a rip off
I have show horses.. and I have had work done by some of the best in the country... I know that Banfield are not equine vets... but I have dealt with alot vets in my lifetime and I have not dealt with such bad service I had no problem naming where it is... Lacey Wa

I've heard from vets and pet owners that corporate vet practices are often not as high quality as the traditional independent and partnership-model vets. Of course, I heard it form competing independent vets.

I take my cats to a partnership of two local and independent vets.

Well, perhaps people treat PetSmart veterinary clinics as Docs in a Box, like--you don't go there except for weird stuff that you can't get into your regular vet for. I don't know, am just guessing. I wouldn't think that one would develop much of a relationship with the Petsmart vets.

The quality of veterinary care varies sooooo much, it's amazing. I've got my uber cheap vet for routine care and for cat care (cats don't get specialty veterinary care at our house), my uber expensive vet-in-general-practice for my own dog, my reasonable vet- in- general practice who does specialty bulldog surgeries but who is an hour drive away, and then--there are the specialists, haven't even listed them yet.
