"Airbnb, arguably the world’s most popular crowdsourced hospitality site, was ruled illegal in New York City today. It’s a tough break for the site, recently valued at $2.5 billion, that makes it cheaper for tourists to visit cities and stay in apartments located out of typically dull business districts."
I'm planning on putting my cabin on Airbnb - I hope there are no changes in California! (I would be willing to pay tax - though it would probably become a bureaucratic mess.)

I was wondering if anyone had ever visited there or lived there who can give us some insight into the area, culture, and lifestyle :)
Thanks!

I admit I watch the show Hoarders. It is a very sad show filled with people who live in clutter, squalor and emotional pain. I watch it because it shows me the extreme end of living with too much stuff. It gets me really motivated towards my goal of minimalism and simplicity. I don't watch every show but sometimes when I do , it jump starts my projects that's for sure. I firmly can say that clutter is emotional and letting go can be very liberating! My parents keep everything, so most likely I will inherit their junk.By then I'll know what to do.;)
Before I started living simply I didn't realize how much I had and why I kept it. I grew up that way. Today I am still peeling back layers of extra things, but I do have 40 percent less stuff than 10 years ago. However convincing my DH and DS is another thing!
I regret tossing a few things over the years but I am not afraid of the future, I am welcoming new things and a minimalist way of life.:+1:

Anyone build their own house?

Hi -
As much as I love my cabin, the value of it has more than tripled since I bought it a year ago. I'm thinking of selling and buying a nearby lot for sale, and putting up my own cabin. The cabin would sell for ~500k, the lot I'm looking at is 99k. I'd like to build a cabin with bath, 2 small bedrooms, full kitchen. I would love to include passive and active solar.

Any suggestions? I've been exploring kits and pre-fabs but haven't found anything I like that is affordable. I'm fairly handy but not terribly strong. I could be my own contractor, but hire out plumbing (I'd need to put in septic) and electrical and other things beyond my ken.

Thoughts? Advice?

I am willing to wait awhile and watch the market - really hard to tell what is going to happen next with housing.

The blogger is looking for inexpensive housing in the City. He's finding it -- though some of what he finds would try the biggest minimalists among us... Funny and sad at the same time.

I haven't posted in years but I have evolved my life into simpler living. I got a manual push mower for my birthday last year and have used it ever since.
I get away with cutting my lawn 3 times a week in almost utter silence. I can get away with cutting it on an early sunday morning. I am the only one who is using it on my block. I will continue to and hopefully my neighbors will catch on.I also have used my old ice scraper to edge trim too. It pushes up that extra dirt and grass leaving a fancy and clean cut just the landscapers would do it, bur free. Most of all I get to burn those calories and everyone benefits.
If you have any additional ideas please share!

As much as I ADORE this tree house (http://money.cnn.com/video/pf/2013/04/25/pf-uh-topanga-canyon-treehouse.cnnmoney/index.html), it's a bit funny...

As much as I ADORE this tree house, it's a bit funny that the property (and the main off-the-grid house) is selling for $2.395M (made an error on the price in the title, but close enough). Maybe this could be like one of those articles that shows you a designer dress and then how you could get the same look for $49.99.

I'm quite sure that someone clever on these boards could do the tree house for a heck of a lot less. Any bids?
