http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/...s-feel-guilty/

This article covers a couple of studies about dog behavior tied to owners' perception that they feel "shame" after having done something forbidden.

I don't know who these dogs are! I tell you, shame is not a feeling in bulldogs. I've never seen one of my dogs play guilty party.

A healthy bulldog is a happy, confident dog who believes that everything he/she does has merit. While I've had some unhappy dogs, some neurotic dogs, and some depressed dogs, I've never seen the guilt response.

My title about says it all. I have used a mattress pad over my mattresses for YEARS. I usually hate them - mine slip and have to be pulled down again on the corners etc. This morning while changing the sheets, I thought "why am I struggling with this? What real purpose does it serve?". We are two adults, no children who even visit, we are not messy nor take anything to bed to eat/drink. My mattress is pillow top so is comfy - what purpose was the pad serving I want to know. How about you? Do you use a mattress pad or no? Interested in your replies and your reasons. This seems to simplify my bed making!

I have a very old cell phone.......all it does is call/text/receive calls and texts. All of a sudden tonight, I couldn't get any signal. I can't make calls or receive them. I have lots of battery signal.
I've removed and cleaned the sim card and removed and put the battery back in, but still no signal.
Any other suggestions?
I guess its time for an upgrade. I don't believe in always getting the better model every time something new comes out, so I've used this phone for about 8-10 years. DH has an Iphone and that's probably what I'll get next, if I can't get this one working again.
Any suggestions on what else I might try to get a signal again? Getting a signal here has never been a problem.
Thanks!

Argh in the middle of winter I thought I would never complain about summer, but here is summer and I am complaining. It has been about 100 the last 2 days. my rental house is older, it holds heat (except in the winter of course). I actually have a thermometer deal that i move from room to room with the swamp cooler to see how we are doing cooling it down. My room is still about 86 at 9 pm. The front room feels hotter.

So this house has bars on the windows and funny shaped windows so a window AC would not fit inside. I have one small swamp cooler, last summer they were ALL sold out. I do have someone who wants to give away a portable AC so I need to contact them, however I realize I do not sleep unless it is under 80 degrees! Last night it took a loooong time, like almost midnight, before it possibly got below 80. I opened the front door and am putting a fan directly there even though we get no real privacy, I think I will put damp washcloths all over me and try to sleep. I totally understand the old fashioned sleeping porch, I will see if I can get to the tent in storage actually.

The next 3 days are supposed to be about 90,

Last Monday I received my Dog Mountain e-newsletter, and it read "Dog Mountain has suffered a great loss."

Dog Mountain is the site of the famed Vermont Dog Chapel and home of the Hunecks--artist Stephen and Gwen, his wife.

Stephen committed suicide three years ago when despondent over having to lay off employees--his art business was a casualty of the recession apparently.

His wife Gwen has been trying valiantly to carry on his work and mission. But she was found dead of self-inflicted carbon monoxide poisoning in her home on Monday. They were both 61 at the time of their deaths. I feel so very, very sad about this.

The irony is, Stephen Huneck's art is all about love and joy and whimsy, which makes this tragedy all the more poignant.

I just saw a CNN headline about a husband/wife pair--life coaches who hosted a radio show called The Pursuit of Happiness. They were found dead of an apparent joint suicide.

I feel so very sad for these people who I guess make it their life's work to spread this joy around perhaps in an effort to capture it themselves--and fail to do so.

As for the Hunecks, I have several of their works--I have my "No Dogmas Allowed" and "Dream without Limits" door mats; I have their "Life is a Ball" and "Love is Give and Take" and "Home Sweet Home" giclees. I'll try to carry their messages with me in my life, and think of them as I do.

May they all rest in peace.

After 6 years of service on the mod squad, due to some major stuff that is happening in my professional life (all good!) I have decided to swap my moderator hat for the plain old generic user variety. I wanted to publicly thank all the members of the mod squad, past and present, for all their hard work and for being such a great team behind the scenes. A special shout-out to Rob, Rozie and Helen who kept things going during a particularly challenging period when we had few hands on deck. And a huge note of thanks to Alan for stepping in/stepping up on the technical side when we really needed it.

I'll still be around, though depending on how things are going at work I may not be posting much.

I noticed many positive comments about living in Oregon and Washington in the recent thread on where people live. I think Oregon would be a perfect retirement spot for us except I am not sure about the rain. If I'd moved to Oregon directly from the Midwest and traded snow for rain, I am sure I'd love it. But I am not sure about moving from some place where it is sunny and warm most days.

I do like the home prices in Oregon and I am sure I would love the scenery and outdoor activities. But I am just not sure if I could get used to the weather.

For those of you who enjoy the Pacific Northwest, did you move from a sunny or desert climate? Was it difficult to adjust?
