With the due dates on public library ebooks, I can’t shake the feeling that it’s like homework. When I own the book it becomes autonomous fun.

Hmm, seems a story of people who whatever there sense of right and wrong I can't say I relate to it (multiple unplanned children?). But a work of fiction doesn't need to be of course.

I read it a long time ago, and I can't say it made any particular impression on me.
I find that library due dates are a helpful nudge to get away from my computer and read more.
I can usually renew a book one time.
We can renew twice unless there are others waiting for the book. The fines won't exactly break the bank either, but I do try to return on time out of consideration for other library customers.
