Blessing the Hands that Feed Us by Vicki Robin

After another poster brought it to my attention, I see that Vicky Robin (of YMOYL fame) has written a new book:

Blessing the Hands That Feed Us: What Eating Closer to Home Can Teach Us About Food, Community, and Our Place on Earth
    by Vicki Robin

below are the pithy cover blurbs that make it sound interesting:

Vicki Robin knows that honest, engaging food writing isn't really about food. It's about friends, family, community, spirit, and soil. It's about joy. This book gracefully contains all six in equal measure."—Ben Hewitt, author of The Town That Food Saved: How One Community Found Vitality in Local Food

"Want to find your way from the highway of overeating to the garden of relational eating? Of course you do. For decades, Vicki Robin has been out front, showing us a new path that is not dependent upon mindless consumption. She has kept right on going, all the way to her local food system. And what a hopeful, healthy destination she has found, for her and for everyone who wants to truly and beautifully take our country forward."—Woody Tasch, Chairman, Slow Money

“A deeply personal and fun read that manages to both playfully and honestly recount one woman’s journey into reconnection—with food, with community, and with the land itself that feeds us.”—Nina Simons, Co-Founder and President, Bioneers/Collective Heritage Institute

That does sound interesting. I was at a medical specialist's office yesterday and one 88 year old man was grumbling to me about having to prepare meals for himself and eat alone since November when his wife passed away.
As Cicero said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.”

I will read this, hopefully when the library gets it (after my prompting).

Qualms based on the review: "hyper-locavore eating experience" and "ten-mile diet" (from Yes Magazine):
    1. Up in the Great White North, it is not feasible to eat a 10-mile diet year-round. I know it has been done for 1000s of years, but now - not possible in any mass-participation way (at least in urban areas).
    2. This is now a highly-interconnected world. The old home-steader way-of-life is irretrievably gone (for the majority) and most people must live via trade/exchange.

I am hoping Ms. Robin addresses these concerns, but I am sure she will be an enlightening read in any case.

This sounds like a cool read. I am very much a fan of YMOYL (though not a 100% adherent) and I also have a copy of the updated version of the book that came out in I think 2008? I very much like VR's take on the world in general and I'm thinking this will be a great read once I can find it used and cheap onlne......Rob
