A simple day at home, pick up the rental car at some point and then we'll watch fireworks from the scenic overlook just up the cliff drive from our house. Then to bed, we'll leave early the 5th for NM.

Attending the free community picnic and concert in the park followed by fireworks. Traditional, small town living.

Going to my brother's annual 4th of July cook-out, for which I'll make potato salad, pasta salad and chocolate chip cookies. Will see many extended family members; last year 48 of the cousins, their spouses and kids showed up.

Then return home before dark to walk through the cemetery* across the street from my house to get to the best spot in town to watch the fireworks. Once they are over, escort some of the people who forgot to bring flashlights back across the cemetery, biting my tongue to keep from saying, "If you are afraid of cemeteries, why did you enter one at dusk with no flashlight? And please stop screaming at the footsteps of the other people around you!"

*This part of the cemetery was founded in the 1730s. No active burials. It is maintained by the city as a sort of park. People jog there, walk their dogs, push their babies in strollers. We are not being disrespectful. The place where we sit to watch fireworks is a hill that has no graves on it, just a statue at the top.

Work for a bit (equipment maintence) and then do the family gathering thing (mandatory). I have "three" days off technically (maintenece should take an hour and I volunteered because so much easier to do when no one around), and want to play with the old VW.

I will be working on some online marketing I am doing to pull in some money and I will also be planting okra and sunflowers that weekend. I'm kind of excited as the wind flow is about to change - which means nothing to those who don't live in the Southwest - but the monsoon is about to start next Wednesday and Thursday with mugginess and an eventual chance of rain and the summer weather drama I so love about living in the Southwest. This state sure needs rain BAD too, will be so hoping for a good monsoon this year. Rob

We are lucky in that our front yard, 1/2-mile outside of our very small town, is a perfect vantage point from which to see the annual fireworks display. So as is traditional, we will have a few friends over, I'll make a snackie or two, there will be chilled beer involved, a great fireworks show enjoyed, and everyone will be home by 11.

    Low key and perfect.

    Lin: That sounds perfect!
MY DH is working 10 -3, so we don't have any real plans. I'm actually a big fan of no real plans! Maybe light some sparklers in the yard if the weather is good. Would like to have some mojitos too; we haven't made them yet this year.

My mom is coming to visit for the week. I'm sure there will be some gardening, some grilling, and some sitting on the deck enjoying the view happening on the 4th. If we're lucky, we'll be able to see some of the fireworks from the house so no need to go anywhere. The fireworks always make our dogs crazy so it's better that we are at home with them.

We used to be able to watch the local fireworks from my deck, but they moved slightly and the bushes have grown some, so now you can only see flashes of light and hear the sounds of ordnance. I've taken to going to bed early.

I may also volunteer if the opportunity arises (going to bed early sounds good as well, but it's usually too noisy as everyone is setting off their own fireworks and firecrackers illegally well into the night). Yea I'm really not much for holidays.
