I would suggest going to websites for The Emmys and Golden Globes to find the shows nominated for best dramas, comedies, miniseries.

many of the ones mentioned here are on those lists, but some are not --- tv Rodriguez, Murder She Wrote??????!!!!

Also, just googling "best tv dramas of the year" or " best tv dramas of the decade" and etc brings up good lists.

Top critically acclaimed tv dramas of recent years include

    Breaking Bad
    Orange is the New Black
    Justified
    House of Cards
    Fargo
    Homeland
    True Detective
    The Bridge
    The Affair
    Bloodline
    Game of Thrones
    Mad Men
    Downtown Abbey
    Better Call Saul
    Ray Donovan

and if you want to,go. Back to the dawn of excellent tv, it starts with The Sopranos and continues with

    Deadwood
    The Wire
    The Shield
    West Wing

ones from the UK include, and these are all murder mysteries

    Broadchurch
    The Fall
    Happy Valley

I tire of detective and mystery shows pretty quickly, I like something else propelling the narrative.

I love Mrs. Fletcher! How can you not love a show that had a widow of a certain age as the protagonist who was not only allowed to be intelligent and interesting (if nosy) but also allowed to be brave, independent (without super spy powers) and even a love interest now and then? She was the bomb.

I wanted to like The Fall but even though I loved the actors, I hated it. Had to fast forward to Gillian Anderson's part in each episode. I hate when there is too much footage from the criminal's perspective. Seems too much like a snuff film. Same reason I can't watch Criminal Minds. Yuck. It's like torture porn. I've honestly and sadly been privy to too much real life sex crime that I cannot find the entertainment value in it.

And funny, I liked The Fall because we really got to know that perp and he was interesting.

But I Agree that there is a lot of torture porn on tv, and for the network shows, they are so weak that it simply is not worth watching.

Justified had some awful and violent scenes, but I made it through them without closing my eyes, and that show is so well weitten and played that the violence was secondary.

I had to give up on Sons of Anarchy a few seasons in, too much awful, violence even though I loved those guys.

Lessisbest's list is our go-to viewing and often what I'll play in the background as I'm working.

Just going through and watching the old classics is fun. The costumes, the cars, the lines!

My husband is currently enjoying the original Bixby/Ferrigno Hulk tv series while I'm laughing at the bad makeup,
and other shortcuts and effects done in old tv shows.

    Other viewing I'd recommend:
Firefly & Serenity (YES!, the movie is back on Netflix!)
Headhunters - It's like Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels but edgier, Norwegian I think
Lilyhammer - Mobster decides he wants to live out his time in witness protection program in Lilyhammer.
    Redirected
    Ragnarok
    Ascension

I find really bad disaster movies like Category 8 hilarious. MST3K worthy!
My husband likes to watch the mountain climbing movies and documentaries.

Enjoy the rabbit hole in your searches...if you don't like something, turn it off and watch something else.
    Doesn't cost extra to try

PS - Snowpiercer was awful! Don't waste your time.

There's a lot of really nifty documentaries, including the Ken Burns PBS ones. Also, a lot of Nova episodes. I probably watch too much TV but my favorite hobby is knitting or crochet, so it makes sense to have on something that I get a lot out of just listening.

    Ones I've liked:

    Ken Burns- Prohibition
    Ken Burns- The West
    Secrets of Underground London
    Titanoboa
    Dinosaur 13
    Bigger than T-ReX
    The Emperor's Ghost Army
    The Search for General Tso
    The Poisoners' Handbook

Any other favorite documentaries on Netflix? As you can see, I'm a sucker for history and paleontology.

Now these documentaries are something I wouldn't normally watch. Anyone got any more docs that were good?
