What happens to all those sandbags??

Over the years, I've seen probably millions of sandbags on the news, wherever there is flooding. What happens to all those after the waters recede?

And where did they suddenly get all that sand in the first place?

I hope they put the sand back where they found it.....but you know that's probably never going to happen. And all those bags? Will they just get dumped into the trash??

I suspect the environmental damage caused by the flooding itself outweighs the trouble posed by the bags, or the sand.

After flooding though, the sand in the bags is contaminated with all sorts of unpleasant things, and should be disposed of properly.
