kind of a long read, but a fascinating perspective of why Some Trump voters, who stand to lose a lot, and what they hoped to gain by voting for him.

Excellent article. I gotta say I think most Trump voters are deeply delusional if they think they're ever going to land those kinds of jobs. Especially with the union busting that's taken place and continues. More and more lately we find that jobs like that just don't exist unless you have a Phd (and even then perhaps not). They're trying to step back into the 1950's.

Just like they're delusional that they will ever be in a position to benefit from the huge tax cuts they keep supporting for the rich. They're never going to be in that boat. Netiehr will I for that matter which is fine with me. I don't want to join the ranks of the ultra rich, I find them disgusting.

Ever since What's the Matter with Kansas, I've been impressed by the chutzpah of people who feel they understand a given voter's interests better than the voter does, based on the principle of maximization of free stuff.

I'm also impressed by the political theory that any untaxed income or wealth represents a benefit received from the State in the form of "white socialism".

That article is why Democrats will continue to lose forever. I thought it was actually going somewhere in suggesting that a lot of people don't want welfare they want good JOBS.

Ok some people would be very happy not working another job in their life ever, they want to run off and be bohemians making art, or living the life of a Greek philosopher pursuing knowledge, or merely caretaking the young or elderly as women have always done often on top of paid work. And so what if they do, we don't need as much formal productivity as we have, at all, and in fact we might need some of this unpaid labor a lot more than we need what people can get a paycheck for.

But maybe some other people really just want a @#$# decent job umkay. But the article wasn't about: politicians really need to run on a jobs program if they want votes. It was just about bashing people getting tax breaks and calling for a more stable sensible welfare system, which is fine, but isn't necessarily going to win over people who want good jobs. Many voters may not want the existing welfare system in part because it sucks, but also maybe they would rather have a jobs program (it's not either/or one could run on jobs and single payer, but it's just no one has been running much on jobs at all except people like Trump).

The article is kind of about "golden handcuffs." No matter what color you are, the system is set up to basically enslave the worker for the benefit of the owners. When you have to partake in corporate/government jobs in order to "earn" all the privileges of cheap health care, 401k matches, life insurance, disability benefits, it reinforces the hold of capitalism over whatever political system is in power at the moment. Unless you own a company or work for a company, you have to live creatively and walk a tightrope with virtually no safety net.

It has been my experience in working with people to get them back to work is that most people want a decent job with fair pay. The number of people that don't want to work is small. It is sad that you used to be able to support your family with a HS degree and now can not. Much of that is due to automation in the factories and factories going overseas for cheap labor. The world has changed and it's not going back.
