I've also bought tons of puzzles at thrift stores-- usually pay between $2-5, with the more expensive ones being those that retail for much higher prices.
Only had a couple have missing pieces. I try to be zen about it.

I tried so hard to like the free daily online puzzles but they're just not the same
I like them, but you're right--they're a different experience entirely. That's OK, I like different puzzles, like Word Jumble and Cryptic Crosswords, too. There are lots to choose from. AARP has a few: http://games.aarp.org/category/allgames I like Split Words.
