Is the Paperwhite easier on the eyes that reading on a tablet? Like Float, I have too much screen time and my eyes hurt a lot.

Paperwhite is easier on the eyes, IMO. But not sure if it's a big difference. The original Kindle was touted as the most "page-like" way to read electronically, and that's probably true. There's no backlight at all.

I think with my eyes the backlight is a problem, I will go check out Paperwhite at BestBuy and take a look.

Paper white can be read in the sun which I find difficult with my iPad mini. I get most of my books from the library because I don't buy books at all anymore, they are traditional books because I like contemporary literature and the titles don't tend to have an e-book option. I get free e books from Bookbub and Amazon Prime. The best part is not lugging books when I travel or when I have to take a parent to an MD appt and am already weighed down with their stuff. If I could get most the books that I wanted in e-book format from my library, I would use my kindle/iPad more for reading, but alas the titles to pick from are pretty mainstream.

Tybee, the Paperwhite is good, but I think the original (cheapest) Kindle is the best because there's NO backlighting. I think the way I wrote that post was confusing.

Thanks, I will go check them out! I just read a book on my little iPhone and ugh, what a not optimal experience.

    No Kindle.

I looked at both, and was given a Nook some years ago. At the time, it had a slight advantage in content format and compliance with open source publishing formats.
I have a lot of technical books on it, and some books from Project Gutenberg. It is basically a reference library.
But there are physical reference books I prefer, and then there is casual reading. The later, I normally find the book used/like new, for around a penny and then shipping. (cheaper then Amazon's price with free shipping)
Or I get books at garage sales, or a damaged freight store.
I prefer physical books and get them cheaper then digital ones. (that interest me)

Basic Kindle today only: $69.99 (reg. $99.99)

Paperwhite today only: $109.99 (reg $139.99).

Both offers are Prime-member only; both are without "special offers"--if you can tolerate ads now and then they're about $20 cheaper today.

I was given a kindle and assumed it was a paper white but it is not back lit so it must be an original kindle. It is very close to reading a book, IMHO. I had a partially repaired detached retina so I only have good vision in one eye, of all my devices, I read best on this one.
