Driving cross country sort of spur of the moment years ago, we used the book Let's Go USA. It is geared toward students so most suggestions are low cost. I just googled it and it looks like the last time they updated it was 2007 though. Apparently the Let's Go organization shifted its focus to Europe. Still, perhaps there is some similar updated book out there -- we really saved a ton of money and stayed in some neat places using that book. We did not have a set itinerary and were able to just kind of look around in the book and pick things to do and places to stay as we went along, depending what was of interest and how far we felt like driving that day, etc.

I love driving cross country, jealous!
