    Eating out for Thanksgiving

T'Giving has always been my favorite holiday. Now that we are far from family, we are still trying to figure out what to do. I have never even considered eating out before but the more I think about it, the more it appeals. By the time we buy a turkey and all the fixings, it doesn't cost a whole lot more and would greatly simplify the day. And it's just the two of us anyway. There appear to be a lot of options too so I guess quite a few eat out instead of making the big feast themselves. Have any of you ever eaten out for T'Giving?

I've never enjoyed Thanksgiving, but one year we went to a Chinese vegan restaurant (Bamboo Garden in Seattle) and had a wonderful dinner.

We ate out last year at a family restaurant and it was great, and lo and behold, the farmer who grows our oatstraw was sitting at the next table.

There was a time I was a volunteer patient escort at a large hospital, and I decided to have Thanksgiving dinner there -- with staff/volunteers/patient-families. My Dear Wife and I were empty-nesters at the time. When I suggested the idea to DW, she thought it made a lot more sense than "cooking up a feast" for just the two of us.
That particular hospital originated with the philanthropy of a highly successful businessman. I don't know if other hospitals do the same at Thanksgiving: but there and then the meal was free to all comers.
The kitchen went to great lengths to put out good and plenty. Being a regular volunteer, I felt "part of the family". I recall also a fine sense of hospitality in the dining room, extended to families of patients... most of whom had been forced to give up holiday celebration at home because their loved one was hospitalized. I wore my volunteer vest and name badge... which resulted in "strangers" recognizing me and striking up a conversation.

If you're near a casino, consider their holiday buffet. Very reasonable (I think about $25-$29 plus tip) for each person. Does not include any alcohol, but the buffet is usually very well stocked, even beyond the normal turkey, potatoes, stuffing, etc. You don't have to play, you can walk past all of the slots and into the restaurant. It can be busy on holidays so try to go towards beginning or end of the dinner time frame.

I've eaten out on a few Thanksgivings, and always enjoyed it. DH and I have had T-day at a favorite seafood restaurant a couple of times in recent years, and it could be my new favorite tradition (although quite un-frugal). We didn't even have to have turkey, which is definitely not a favorite of mine. I've had plenty of traditional family gatherings around a trough of mashed potatoes and gravy. Bring on the sushi and the raw bar platter.

Many of our Indian restaurants are open on Thanksgiving and we had a lovely turkey curry on the buffet line for one of them.

Years back, Thanksgiving was the only day we saw some of the relatives. Getting all of us together, made eating out a necessity. The location made that decision, as locally we had a buffet place (30+ people).

I’m sorry, you guys go right ahead. I’m cooking for nine. I’m going to enjoy it. I’ll probably have left overs....so you are welcome to stop by. There’s no way I could eat out on Thanksgiving. No dang way!
