Thread: Water Down Chimney

A chimney specialist says he will come out early next week. The roofer refused to fix the flashing which is under warranty and I have a complaint in process with the Better Business Bureau against him, but in the meantime I want this fixed before we get another heavy rain. I have contacted a half dozen companies, some roofers as I thought of replacing the last portion of the roof (downslope from the chimney) which has roof algae on it at the same time, and some chimney folks and only one has responded. This is a problem I have had in the past - contractors don't want to be bothered with small residential jobs. So yesterday DS sprayed more Wet and Forget on the bottom portion of the roof, which we previously treated last fall.

Thank you everyone for your input.

The chimney specialist has recommended both flashing and waterproofing the masonry. He has done work for me before and I trust his judgment. I am reading that wind driven rain in particular can go through old, unwaterproofed masonry, and that's the type of storm we had when the chimney was leaking. The flashing doesn't look that different from my neighbor's so will see what they find when someone with knowhow gets up on the roof.
