Friday nights alone (a good thing!)

I was talking to a colleague today about our plans for the evening/night. He said: "It is gonna be wild! I am going to the grocery store, get some food and beer, then I will pick up a movie from the library and watch that, maybe drink some cold ones and dine on a few bowls of grape nuts. Totally crazy!"

But it got me to thinking. I love a good Friday night alone, low key, relaxed.

Tonight I came home and lounged around for a while, then I went to a Mexican restaurant (got fajitas with veggies and chicken, beans, mild salsa, whole grain corn tortillas -- healthy stuff, but still tasty). I watched some baseball on their TV screens and just kicked back. I am home, chatting with a friend in gmail now. I will do some drawing and watch the Orioles play. Then I will read some H.P. Lovecraft until I fall asleep.

Anyone else enjoy a solo Friday night on their own terms?

Of course! Even for those of us in retirement land, we have a stretch of days ahead of us that do not involve obligations, and they are treasured. Enjoying. Good book or good tv show or good movie is a great evening.

I love Fridays at home...all days at home, in fact.

I remember when working how luscious Fridays felt when the workweek was over and I could do whatever I wished at home. Today, I ran errands trying to beat a hailstorm that eventually hit just as I put the car away. So glad to be at home in my jammies and ready to relax. Was also my last day of volunteering at the school for the year so that feels like a weight lifted.

I'm not solo, but I do enjoy Friday nights, as my weeks these days are pretty busy with work. I had gotten up at 5am to put 3 hours in on a report, and then I had 4 hours of telephone interviews on another project, and then I had to finish up the report on the first project by 3 and then Bob the Plumber came by to discuss replacing a 10-gallon hot water heater (I learned the hard way that 10 gallons of hot water is not enough for a decent shower) and then I had to do final edits on the report which went out at 6pm.

So Friday night, DH and I went on a meander up through the islands and back again. It was restful and beautiful although driving north I was at risk for a head-on collision at any given moment because my head would turn westward to gaze at the sunset, and my steering would follow.

Then I came home and watched half of a movie on my computer. (Swingers--an oldie but goodie) It was a nice quiet Friday evening.

Oh, yeah. For years it's been really difficult to get DW and me out of the house on Friday night. Often we're too tired from a crazy week, but even on normal weeks we're "peopled out" and just want to rejuvenate ourselves with a night in without obligations.

I totally get it. Not always friday, but definitely enjoy spending an evening home alone. SO travels for work a few times a year and I love being able to just come home, make a burrito for dinner (he hates beans so anytime he's not home for dinner that's my go to food) and hang out and read or whatever.

Fridays yes, but by Saturday night if I haven't gone out at least to walk or work in the yard or run errands I get cabin fever.
