    Voting decision conundrum

As everyone knows, these mid-terms are hugely important. I am not yet a qualified to be a resident of VT, so I'll be voting in NJ.

The Senate race in NJ is between Bob Menendez (D) and Bob Hugin (R). NJ is usually blue, but the race is really getting close.

I am a registered Democrat in order for me to be able to vote vote in a primary, but I am truly independent at heart. For the mid-terms, my heart tells me to vote in a way that will get a more Democratic agenda back in the legislature to prevent the spread of a greater Trumpocracy.

Here's the conundrum: Bob Hugin is a moderate Republican whose views I'm not crazy about but could live with and Bob Menendez is a %*!! whose views/voting record I support but whose ethics are horrible. He's a crook and a liar, but he's not Republican.

In another time, I would vote for Hugin. But these are different times.

    What's an independent to do?

Hugin may be moderate, and needs to be to win in NJ, but a vote for him is a vote for McConnell and Trump. He will do nothing to moderate the agenda in DC any more than Susan Collins does.

Anyone who stands with the Republican party at this moment in history doesn't deserve your vote.

A Democrat who is "a crook and a liar" doesn't deserve your support either.

Vote for some other candidate, and don't play the game you are being forced into.

My view is that Trump too shall pass and I would like to see a substantial GOP still standing after he does. Likewise for the more reasonable segment of the Democrats.

I certainly don’t want to see a political apocalypse that only cockroaches and socialists survive.

Voting for “the lesser of two evils” has gotten us to where we are at this moment. It’s moved the right to the far right and the left to center so that we now need to add the far right and the far left to the equation. And it has gotten us Trump. Obama was supposed to have been the far left but he turned out to be center. He did nothing for unions, was the last to embrace gay marriage, enacted a Romneycare type healthcare, and generally did nothing for African Americans. Continue to vote the lesser of two evils and we will have someone worse than Trump.....if you can imagine that. The duopoly that we have now needs to be challenged by a third party.

I rarely vote a straight party ticket but I did this time. sorry but a 3rd party doesn't have a chance.

We’re a big messy country. Probably too big to be effectively run by coalitions of little boutique regional and fringe parties. Over time the two major parties are forced to change themselves into something that can attract big, diverse groups of voters to remain viable. If they don’t, they go the way of the Whigs and get replaced by a new major party.
