Anyone have surgery for a tear duct obstruction?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, my one eye waters alot. I saw my regular eye doc and he tried to irrigate the duct. Once it worked, once it didn't. He referred me to a specialist.

I saw the specialist yesterday. He's supposedly a really great doc. But he did a couple things that made me think he went through everything too quickly. I'm not even sure the irrigation tube was in the right place.
He said I needed surgery. No openings until October, which was good, so I have time to think about this and do more research......maybe even see another doc.

Yes, my eye waters off and on during the day, but I'm not sure I want this surgery. Plus, he leaves a tube in there to keep the new channel in the nose bone open.......for 2-3 months, and then it comes out easily, back out the tear duct. But you're not supposed to itch your eye during that time. ???

Just curious if any of you have had any experience with this surgery. It requires a general anesthesia with intubation. It's an out-patient procedure.
Damn. One more thing to deal with. It's not a critical problem. I may choose just to have my eye water until I die.

Hi Cathy: Sorry you are having this issue, but I'm afraid I don't have any helpful input. Eye surgery sounds really scary to me, so I can see why you might decide to just live with the issue. Good luck!

I had a neighbor who had this procedure done maybe 6-9 months ago. All seemed to go well for her.

Cathy, my DH had a cyst that destroyed one of his tearducts, and he had surgery to remove it and replace his tearduct. It went really well for him. He had the same drain channel issue - it looked like a string and it would actually move if he messed with it. Kinda gross, but it worked. As an added bonus, after the surgery his debilitating sinus headaches pretty much went away. That was 20+ years ago and he has had no issues since. If you aren't sure of your specialist, though I'd go for a second opinion. DH's surgeon WAS his 2nd opinion - the first guy pretty much said - oh well, not much we can do, it should be fine. . .

Thanks everyone. early morning....interesting, I have been having more headaches than usual too. Sounds like, so far so good, with the people several of you have known who have had it. Thanks!
