You'll still be able to use it, albeit without access to security updates and new OS features once the upcoming OS 13 is replaced by OS 14, probably in late 2020. The lack of security and feature updates will probably not be noticeable for some time after that. If you're not a high-risk user you could probably still use the phone forever without issue.Originally Posted by razz

There also is the exposure of being able to download versions of apps that work on your phone (or iPad; essentially the same OS and mechanism). Apps tend to update with OSes and if your device cannot use the current app on the App Store because the one that works for you is two versions behind, you're likely not going to be able to find that usable version of the app.
As Alan wrote, as a voice-call telephone, even an older iPhone will continue to work. However, over time, even the ability to make and receive phone calls will end as carriers move bandwidth around to the faster technologies that newer phones can use. Some carriers are already refusing to activate non-3G phones on their networks (which would exclude the first two or three iPhone models); some also are not activating phones that cannot run on LTE (every iPhone before the 5). Today's mobile phones (not just iPhones; Android and all the rest are prey, too) just ain't the ol' Western Electric that sat on a table for decades, waiting for the next call.

I am utterly confused by it.
I just upgraded my 5c. It really was acting up and I need a reliable phone for business, plus the memory was too low for what I need. I got an iPhoneX figuring I'll probably use it for a long time, like I did my 5c.

I use my smart phone only when I have to. I have a 6 S That came “free “with the package. One of my main problem is that I just don’t have a convenient way to haul it around, I’m still trying to figure out where it fits in my stuff.
One really needs a smart phone when one is traveling,
I think. I also learned that in order to have effective Airbnb interactions, one needs a cell phone. And then of course there’s Uber which is based on the idea that everyone has a smart phone. In the past few weeks of us vacationing, Ubering, Air bnbing, car renting and Mapquesting, our cell phones got a work out. Soon I can put it back on the shelf and barely look at it although it does provide hotspot Wi-Fi access when I’m in Hermann. At the end of the month we are getting Wi-Fi in Hermann and —also cable channels! We have never in our lives had cable tv but we’re going to try it for a while see how that works.
I've got an iPhone 6 that I still love. I had the battery replaced a year ago during Apple's battery-gate episode for $29 so it still works as good as ever. I've had it 4 1/2 years and hope to get another year or year and a half out of it. By then the 11's and maybe even the 12's will be out so the X's will be available at reduced prices. Since we're at the point where the latest and greatest features aren't a big attraction to me an X will be fine unless they come up with some super duper innovation.
I agree that they are not initially intuitive, although when I first got an iPhone 7 1/2 years ago I quickly caught on to how it worked. Where is your confusion? If you've got it functioning, set up email and figured out how to use Safari to look at web pages you're 3/4 of the way there. Download the youtube app and you can even watch your favorite youtube channels on it.
I switched from android to iPhone and found it so much easier to use and very intuitive.
