Consumer Cellular offers service through either T-Mobile or AT&T. In both cases that coverage is not quite as good as regular postpaid T-Mobile or AT&T service, but it's better than the prepaid coverage offered by either carrier. CC defaults to offering T-Mobile service, but you can get AT&T service by asking for it, so if one is markedly better where you will want service, specify that one. If you're in Target buying the SIM, CC affixes a T or an A to the model number to indicate the carrier.
Thanks, Steve! This is very useful information. I'm "hesitant" about taking the jump off my tracfone; it's what I'm used to; I can afford it; etc. Our landline number is our main phone number with EVERYONE - LOL. So getting rid of it (eventually) will be a bit of a hassle.

Can you not use the same phone number for mobile for continuity?

I could but that would mean giving up my cell - which is also "out there".

I don't know that we will be doing anything anytime soon, but all this definitely helps - thanks!!

You should be able to except for some fairly rare technical reasons. It's called "number portability" or "porting your number" and it should not be an issue for most carriers.

This weekend I upgraded my smartphone from an iphone 6 to an iphone 11. The 6 lasted almost 5 years and has been great. Other than spending $29 on a new battery 2 years ago it has worked perfectly. Hopefully the 11 will last just as long.

I well remember the days before smartphones and honestly I would prefer not to relive them. My new phone cost me $538 including sales tax. Considering the stuff it can do, and do well, I consider it one of the best uses of my life's energy all year.
