    Next Steps

We are replacing our furnace with a mini-split system. The first step along this path is replacing a double window with a smaller, fixed-pane window. That got ordered today. Hurrah!

    Progress!

The last flea market was last weekend. The money was applied to our debit, as planned.

Nice progress! What made you go with the minisplit?

We wanted something where we could potentially do something to offset the energy cost. Our old furnace is propane. It failed. Specatuclarly, over the course of months, to the tune of $$$$ in repairs. Came down to Carrier said they would not honor their lifetime warranty. We upgraded our wood stove instead. We can grow wood, but not propane.

DH has bad hands on occasion and announced this spring that he no longer wants to heat with wood. Originally we were going to get a small propane stove, but a mini split can be run on solar, and that’s our long term plan. Means that no matter what the propane man wants to charge, we can make the house warm. Won’t work during a power outage, but the propane furnace didn’t either.

For the buck, the mini split fits our long-term goals. Low daily maintenance and potentially more self-sufficient and energy efficient.

That's really helpful. We have similar goals with self-sufficiency, so we will have to look into it for when we move.

DH was installing the window when he fell from the platform and broke his leg. This project is on hold for the moment! I got ahold of the place we had planned to buy the mini split and asked if they could install the window as part of it? They need to come out and do a site evaluation before anything else happens.

I am so sorry that happened to your husband! I hope they can install the window, too.

That is certainly crappy about your DH falling and injuring himself.

Thanks! Yep, we're learning all about the different types of rehab facilities at the moment. How much PT is given where, etc. This has been a real education!

UPDATE: DH is doing much better, no walker, no bed downstairs, etc. he still uses a cane, and probably will for a while yet. But for those of you who are interested, with a very small sample of data 1.x months worth, here’s what we figure it’s $40 a month more than wood and $200 a month less than propane. Dh’s back of the napkin calculation is that it would “pay for itself” in 47 months with the propane savings.
