THe problem is that too many people are too ready to get upset at everything that they don't bother to click the link. Yes, a good headline can be effective satire. The onion does it all the time. But the headline rosa notes in her post doesn't smack one in the face as being satire. At least not if one thinks all democrats are america hating socialists.

I find it disturbing that so many people are willing to believe the worst, are willing to believe anything without considering the source, and are willing to spread/share misinformation without any sense of responsibility to make sure it is true.

That can be seen on Facebook every day. I can't believe how often an untrue meme will spread like wildfire. I check Snopes so often now I sent them a donation last year.

As for Babylon Bee, I've never heard of it, but will check it out! I'm probably have to replace my Prius in a couple of years, and I'd love to get the package with the virtue signaling!

Can be seen on network news too. Media reports part of the story but not the whole story. At least the ones we watch nightly.

yea not funny mostly, and not "not funny" because I'm outraged, an ill-time gallows joke, that really shouldn't be said, can be darn funny still, but rather not funny because not funny. The Onion some of the headlines, yea you do start giggling at just the headline. Maybe I'm comparing the best of the Onion to the worst of this, because I probably only ever even read the Onion when the headline itself is funny and linked to, does anyone really read it as a matter of course?

in a few years FULLY electric cars might be fully viable (but only if there are enough charging stations around). I mean they are semi-viable now but a real pain (sure I see a fair amount of Teslas but somehow I don't think the main signal meant to be sent there is virtue)

I thought it kind of did smack me in the face as satire. The main concern of the viewers-with-alarm was based on the assumption that the people who would think it was funny were the wrong sort of people; more so than the people who would think it was true.

There are so many sources on the internet for confirming ridiculous beliefs (birthers, truthers, Trump as Manchurian Candidate, etc.), that satirical web sites seem to me to be a pretty minor threat.

In general, I LOVE satire, and always have. For years I've enjoyed live performance satire, a la The Capitol Steps

    .

I only watch Saturday Night Live in election cycles.

Not just political satire. I also love cultural satire--such as Portlandia. I could watch that all day and poke fun of people like me.

Satire is a great non-violent tool to bring awareness with humor to ourselves and the human condition. I'd be so upset if we got to the point where even that was off-limits for political correctness.

LDAHL: The threat is the unthinking Americans who believe ridiculous claims without even considering the source; it isn't the satire sites themselves.

If Snopes or CNN truly believed that, I don’t think they would expend so much energy debunking “claims” made in jest so disproportionately on one end of the political spectrum. I think it may more be a case of humor being the first casualty of ideological conflict.
