Brexited!

Wow, somehow with all the other stuff happening here in the US, I lost track of Brexit, but it's done!! Wow.

Is anyone surprised it actually came to be? How do you think it will affect global markets?

I just think this is a major event for Brits.

It's definitely a major event for the UK. It will be interesting to see how things turn out. My former mega-corp employer was in the process of making some fairly significant operational changes because of brexit, mainly around moving a large chunk of their European HQ operations out of London and into places that are still in the EU. My former boss's boss, for example, who is French but had been living in LA for a decade, decided to move back to France to take on a newly created role there that was a result of these changes and he's just one of hundreds of senior level people at one corporation among hundreds (thousands?) of similar companies.

My daughter is pretty happy, as she reports, she and her British boyfriend will now have to wait in the same customs/immigration lines when travelling.

My English friend is happy and my polish DIL not so much. Was told that our Europe trip in August that we should have our passports with us because border crossings will change and it will probably take a year to sort out.

Going to take more than a year and how fast depends on both sides negotiating skills. Currently in a "transitional" period but no guarantee of anything.

Thumb your nose at your biggest and closest trading partner who is tied into almost everything you do and to not expect bad things to happen seems to be fantasy thinking.

The UK is so insignificant in the world's markets that it will be a blip to markets but it will have a huge effect on the UK.

They still have not resolved the Irish issue but I bet now Northern Ireland is let go.

Scotland overwhelmingly chose to remain in the EU so they will vote to leave the UK in the next couple of years. Nationalism sounds good when one dreams that the world will give one all one wants and then one wakes up to find the world has gone ahead without you.
Having said that, I am willing to be surprised at the resilience in the experience of the UK. If they thrive despite the challenges, others in the EU may consider doing the same.

Did I ever say that I love living in Canada despite any challenges that exist?

The beauty of being a secessionist party that hasn’t successfully seceded yet is that you can distract from your domestic issues and failures with demands for freedom. Have there been any polls of the non-Scot portions of the UK indicating their attitude on the subject? I understand some consider Scotland to be a fiscal drain.
