I just blew my chance to have my average end of year spending lower than last year's by buying a new car. What's frugal is I spent less than I had saved in my new car fund by switching from a compact to a subcompact. What would normally be frugal is I paid cash, but interest rates are so low now I don't know that that's a factor.

Jeppy, did your car salesman “send in the manager to talk with you” about how you should finance this car rather than pay cash? Because then you would have cash to go on vacation! Or etc.

Prior to that, when we bought two cars in one year through our friend, he didn’t fuss us with the “you should finance this” talk because he deals with a lot of old people like us who just want to buy a car, making it simple, and not complicate the deal. He knows his clientele.

Maybe the new car wasn't a good decision. Today, the first full day I drive it, and keep in mind it's brand new, I get to work fine but at lunchtime when I turn it on because it's a nice day and I want to roll down the windows the check engine light comes on. I turn it off and try again, a rumbling noise and the light again. Let it rest try again, no noise but the light thing. I try to call roadside assistance and you need to a smartphone which I do not have to click in a link in a text, you cannot get a live person. So I call the dealership, they have me try again, check engine light again. They will send out a tow truck bringing me a loaner and taking the lemon back for the master mechanic to look at. So I hate my car again!
buying cars for cash is why I have a pretty mediocre credit rating though. I look at my credit rating: "Meh. Oh, never financed anything beyond a monthly credit card, duh I guess"
