We use ours all day long for reheating foods. I do a lot of batch cooking.
My parents never had a microwave when I was growing up. You can batch cook and reheat without one, but it makes a lot more dishes.
The microwave saves a lot of time - which is my most precious commodity.

I've never plugged the microwave into the kill-a-watt. Do they really use that much phantom energy?

My Panasonic is listed as meeting "US Department of Energy Standards" for energy use. Apparently it is not labeled "Energy Star" since there are no Energy Star specifications for cooking appliances. It only runs a display and a membrane keyboard while it's not in use. Oh, and a light if you open the door. I can't imagine it uses that much energy waiting to work. However, since we live on the planet where light switches don't have OFF positions, we'll never know.

Well I can't imagine it using more energy overall that a stove, but I don't have a microwave. I have a stove, it came with the apartment, it's probably near as old as me (and it's permanent pilot, so talk about idle energy use ...), and probably much of the time I just cook on the stove top, but the oven gets some use as well. And no I could not do without a stovetop and oven.

So, I got the kill-a-watt and stepladder out. It uses 3 watts at rest. That comes to just under 2.2 kw/hours per month. Not zero, but not enough to make me get out the stepladder to plug in the microwave every time I want to use it. (the outlet is in the cabinet above the unit).

And this is undoubtedly far less than the tv/cable box/tivo/cable modem/Apple tv/alarm system box conglomeration of stuff that run 24/7 in our living room.

We turned off the display/time feature. Ours is GE.

I didn't replace the light inside when the bulb burned out. That way I leave the door ajar so that it dries out between uses so reducing the possibility of it rusting inside as my former one did.
Nice to know about the usage at rest, jpl.

I did, too. Three clocks in the kitchen and none of them match. Ever. Simple living dictated switching off two of them.

Right? We have to adjust all of our clocks every month: alarm clock, stove clock, the travel clock in our bathroom and the clock in hubsters Xterra. Only the phones and my car keep accurate time.
