    National Pecan Day 4/14/2020

In 1775 George Washington found the time to plant pecan trees on his Mount Vernon estate, trees which were a gift from Thomas Jefferson.

I personally celebrate by cracking pecans, carefully cleaning the "meats" and toasting them in the oven.

But for those with a sweet tooth, pralines or pecan pie may be a memorable way to observe National Pecan Day.

From the e pluribus pluribus department, there are at least 5 American pronunciations for pecan:
    pick-AHN TX, OK
    pee-kaaan Brooklyn
    PEE-ken KY
    puh-cawn New Orleans
    pee-KAHN most widely spoken

Dh's grandfather was a beekeeper and pecan farmer in south Texas. It was a fall ritual to gather pecans (pi-kahns - accent on last syllable) with the family and take our share home. Most years, we would have 3-4 paper grocery bags full. I always made a large plate of pralines for Thanksgiving. I planted a Choctaw pecan at my home in Austin and by now it is probably bearing nuts every fall. Thanks for the memory!
