Seed sources

I'm looking for pointers to reputable suppliers of seeds - veggies and herbs - for a very small garden I am going to be starting on my deck here in the PNW - doesn't have to be fancy stuff.

I'll eat just about anything, but wouldn't mind pointers to veggies that grow well in Earthbox or similar containers.

I would say green leafy things, and certain tomatoes--there are cascading grape/cherry tomatoes that look nice in containers. Or you can get tomatoes that you can stake in the container.

My big rule is grow what you like to eat.

Have you looked at Square Foot Gardening for ideas? There is a book by Mel Bartholomew but here is a quick intro to it.https://www.bhg.com/gardening/how-to...oot-gardening/.

I have done this and found it interesting and helpful in planning any veggie garden. Start with leaf lettuce, green onions, radishes, carrots, beets, leeks, and a couple of tomatoes and peppers. If I can buy the veggie more cheaply than I can grow it, such as yellow onions, cabbage and cauliflower, I don't waste time with them. I love fresh green beans so always grow enough of them to eat and freeze for winter.

As for seeds, don't be surprised if they cannot ship seeds quickly as the demand due to Covid 19 has kept seed houses very busy.

I get my seeds from Botanical Interests. Their seeds are common in some stores here. Organic, some heirloom, small or larger sized packets.

I have friends who get seeds from the Seed Saver's Exchange. A non-profit that has a lot of heirloom, unusual and hard to find seeds.

Territorial seeds is in Oregon if you're looking for more "local". I personally use Johnny's that Catherine mentioned, High Mowing, Pine tree Gardens. These are all New England area, so have seeds tailored to our shorter growing seasons.

ETA if you order from them, be sure to try out their City Garden mix lettuce. I grow it in an elevated bed. So tender and sweet.

Any tomato: 5 gallon container.

6" soil, any leafy green: spinach, salad greens, kale. You can harvest individual leaves and the plant will produce all season if you don't get hot enough for it to bolt. Also enough for radishes

12" soil needed for longer/larger roots such: carrots, beets, all pepper varieties.....
