In my next dream kitchen, there would be both a huge island to spread out on and a big closed pantry so I can see and reach all that I need. Would prefer no upper cabinets. Light, open, and bright. Will never have it but that would make cooking so much easier.

We added a pantry cabinet to our kitchen. Fortunately the cabinets came from Home Depot so was easy to match. We also added a top and bottom cabinet. We moved the washer and dryer to the garage to make room.

I am sad that I know I will never own a house with a Butler’s pantry. I’m too old and will not be buying a big old house that has one. There are some old condos that have them, But they tend to be too big for me

    Gorgeous!!

Here is one I just saved on Pinterest. It's the vibe I'm looking for in my house, even though my kids and even my friends like the "Crayola house" look (in just 700 square feet, my house has walls that are magenta, pink, green, blue, yellow, and red.)

These are all beautiful--I especially love the outside of the Florida cottage.

How fun is that cottage?! It would feel like summer vacation every day. It has such a happy vibe.

Some years ago, dh had to work out of state for a few months and his company put him up in an apt. and we were surprised at how comfortable and spacious it felt. It was a 1-br, so probably around 700 sq.ft. but it was plenty big for both of us and we could see ourselves living in something like that very easily. We're so used to big houses now (collective "we"), that normal size dwellings seem too small.

I was flipping through a magazine yesterday and saw a kitchen, fancy but otherwise unremarkable, and was shocked to read that the size of the kitchen was about half of my whole house. My house is 1450 sq. ft. There was two islands and one of them was 18' long. The tiny one was 6' long. With a picture it's hard to judge scale so the sheer immensity of it didn't come across on the page but I was blown away. Another kitchen included a 400 sq. ft. addition to the existing footprint.

I get frustrated because it's hard to find photos of average size kitchens with all the elements needed, like decent storage. My kitchen is 10'x13' and honestly it feels big to me because it's just the two of us. What size kitchen do you fellow simple livers have?

    That is a wonderful cottage!
Geila, your kitchen isn't much bigger than mine, but ours is an impossible space because there are 5 doorways/access points from the kitchen and right now it is a hideous hole in our otherwise very nice little house (I kind of started tearing some stuff out and stripped the cupboard so it really, really looks like crap). DH and I cannot see eye to eye on how to deal with the kitchen and we can't even have a proper conversation about it, so at this point it's the source of a lot of negative energy in our household. It's on my "to do" list to call a contractor tomorrow.
We have a limited budget and I had finally come up with what I think is a reasonable plan that would look decent and would be more functional than what we have now. DH's vision is more ambitious and involves stuff like moving the sink across the room, removing/moving radiators and walls, and I think that's going to put us beyond what we can afford. So we did at least reach consensus that we need to get someone in here to take a look and help us understand what's possible and what it might cost. Wish us luck please - we're going to need it!
Anyway, to get back to the thread topic, I do love that white kitchen with the vase full of sunflowers, Geila!
