Back in ancient times, I worked with them at their Wallops Island facility. They were dreadful in terms of keeping to schedules and providing resources they committed to provide. They didn’t have a very good reputation with the military at the time, being more project than mission oriented. There’s a reason everyone fought to hold on to their expendable launch vehicles rather than depend on all the promised shuttle missions.

Giving NASA a military role would be the equivalent of waging war through a faculty committee of a liberal arts college. They’re great at promoting themselves, though.

Maintaining and deploying space-based assets for communication, navigation and surveillance, and negating the enemy’s assets for those purposes. Detecting and tracking enemy missile launches, and stopping them in the boost or orbital stages. Supporting the operations of the other branches. All these missions seem to me to be within the military’s responsibilities.
