I loved my fridge that had an ice maker. That was 11 years ago. I have heard such horror stories about leaks I have never had one again. Maybe it's time.
Get a good plumber, Terry, and go for it!

Tybee, my son is like his dad and is super handy. He will do it. I don’t know anyone that ever had a leak.

Off the top of my head I don't recall this one way or the other. My guess, though, would be that in single family homes it's probably wind and storm damage and in multi-unit buildings water damage from burst pipes of some sort. When I was an insurance broker in NYC we had a lot of residential buildings as insureds. The five or six main carriers that actually covered habitational there worked together whenever a claim came in to stop the problem and rip out the wet drywall quickly to prevent the much greater expense of mold from happening and then would haggle over which carrier's client was responsible later since depending on where the pipe broker it could be either the HOA, the tenant's own pipe, or a neighbor of the insured's pipe that was responsible.
Regarding ice makers, we had one in our city apartment, but don't have one here. I don't miss it but SO does. Personally I prefer not to waste half the freezer space with a big piece of machinery.
space devoted to ice maker was a factor in my decision as well for my apartment sized frodge in my condo. Imdont use ice cubes often; DH uses them daily, but thatbis because he is outside working and he drinks large glasses of tea. In our condo, he will not be working outdoors, so I think a small tray of ice cubes will suffice.
I toyed with the idea of getting a freezer, a tiny one, for the “beverage station “I am making in my condo, but I’ve since decided that’s a lot of trouble and it’s hard to find a freezer that will fit the dimension. I’m just gonna put a cabinet there.
I have not had good experiences with ice makers. I had two basic refrigerators from 1985-2012: one cost $75 and the other $50. Neither had water lines and both worked like champs. Then I bought a floor model refrigerator at Lowe's because I fell in love with the ice/water dispenser at a house we rented on vacation and I had at least 2 sales calls over the next year or so to fix the ice maker. So we replaced that fridge and that ice maker gave us problems, too.
I'm back to ice cube trays. My water filter is attached to my sink, not my refrigerator.

The house and condo closed shortly before 5pm. Max had a dental on the far side of town and it turns out the office to pick up the keys was close so was able to get them. My son started working and I marked which paint colors I wanted on the walls. His friend comes tomorrow to help. Very excited!! I use ice daily in my water so definitely want a ice maker.
