My daughter's old iPhone 6 works has worked fine for me for years. It's still taking updates; it just updated to software version 12.5.2.

And it will probably work fine for several more years although you may already run into problems with apps you may want to install only to find they require a later version of the OS. The current IOS version for newer phones is 14.5.1 but require an iPhone 6s or newer. You can probably count on minor security updates such as 12.5.2 for another couple of years. There are currently no updates for phones older than iPhone 5.

Since Apple controls both the hardware and software side of the iPhone they seem to provide security updates longer than their Android rivals as Android phones are produced by several different manufacturers.

Thank you for this info, Alan. I just replaced my battery for my 6S plus and was wondering how many years longer I would keep it. It goes with me everywhere and I was dreading the thought of having to update my phone to a newer model.
