A few times people on this forum have mentioned some silver linings in the Covid pandemic world. The thread is where we can talk about those.

There have been many interesting outcomes of having to deal with business in a Covid world. By “business “I mean in my hobby and volunteer organizations.
Zoom —we all learned how to use Zoom. Some of us learned how to set up Zoom meetings. Some even learned how to use all of the features in zoom. I’m not in the last category I only know how to set up Zoom meetings.
In my neighborhood, entrenched events were killed. Zoom killed us putting on an in person house tour. We actually put on two house tours a year. That was a grind and we can’t get volunteers to do it anymore, and it was becoming an onorous task to put on two house tours.
In a non-pandemic world I doubt we will go back to two house tours a year. This of course is a huge loss of revenue for us.
Another entrenched event is the huge Halloween event we sponsor in our local City Park. One family put $5000 towards it every year for the past 7 years. Children from all over this part of the city came. The pandemic coincided with this family moving away from the neighborhood even though they offered to fund it for a couple more years. Bless them! But we have all decided we don’t want to take on that obligation any longer.

Virtual Flower shows: We learned how to put on virtual shows. I’ve now been involved in several Virtual Flower Shows. Some of us do it better than others. Each Virtual Show has been set up very differently with different technologies and assumptions.
One of my groups wanted a virtual flower show and kept having meetings without the tech person present. I rolled my eyes as I often do and kept telling them that they need to involve our tech person because we have no idea how she will set it up. The thing has been going now for several weeks and will be over soon and we’re still surprised by choices she made and not in a good way.
The two national level virtual flower shows have been more polished with better planning, Although final presentations of winning entries are very different.

One thing I'm glad work did is they not only let us work from home, they did NOT use zoom. There is really no need for videos of peoples faces, their living spaces (although this can be filtered out) etc.. It's frankly silly many places seemed to expect this. We do have ways to share actually useful work related information, that is to have voice meetings and share our computer screens (to share power points, share our work etc.). That we do often.
Trees don't grow on money
For me, staying home a lot more than usual the past year or so has shown me the beauty in my own backyard, literally and figuratively. Now, when I go out into the city, I sometimes get an unsettling "the built world is so very ugly" realization. The thought of going to a crowded airport and being herded like cattle onto a claustrophobic tube just so I can travel a great distance sounds like a nightmare. Ditto cruise ship. I am content with creating my little beautiful space for now. Or with taking road trips to new or natural places not so distant. Just last week we drove to a tiny mountain town nearby and had a picnic in the town cemetery under huge spruce trees and with a gorgeous view. It was so quiet we could hear the aspen quaking nearby.
At the height of the pandemic there was less traffic and it was better for the environment.
Right now I think there is still a dip in international travel which is also positive for the environment.
We got rid of Trump because of how he bungled the pandemic. Otherwise with a strong economy we might not have.
People not up on me in lines at stores
Short wait times to see doctor
Less people means you aren't sitting in a room for an hour waiting for the doctor to come see you
True introverts are no longer weird. You literally couldn't be an extrovert during Covid
Less traffic on the morning commute and afternoon commute to/from work
Less idiots at work because most worked from home
Found out who the real jerks of the neighborhood were by flaunting their hoard of 300 rolls of TP
Perfect excuse to use if you don't want to do anything or see anyone
A lot of the Great Lakes shipwreck events that I used to not be able to make have been online for the last year and a half. These sort of events worked great virtually. It’s people showing photos and video of shipwrecks while talking about recent discoveries or the history of the wreck. This translates very well to a virtual event. Just miss seeing everyone.
My son came home from teaching in Vietnam and is now studying for a lucrative career that he enjoys and utilizes his graduate degree in mathematics. Without the pandemic this wouldn’t have happened. Of course I benefited from his homecoming because he remodeled my condo saving me 10k and I probably couldn’t have found workers either.
I had to reevaluate my routine of daily activities as facilities closed and have chosen differently.
So much more is now available online and more accessible virtually. Metopera, church services, tours to unique sites are just a few of them.
Saved a lot on gas. Even with my thrifty Prius V, I simply didn't drive as much so much was closed or now available virtually.
As Cicero said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.”
