That's actually quite funny. Thanks for the laugh. I needed it as night crew was off on cash tally way way way over the acceptable range. Rob

You were the guest of honor at a party given by a friend of that relative.
The person who made the offensive remark was probably at least a few years older than you.
And they were no doubt a friend of the host/hostess.

Under the circumstances it would have been extremely rude for you to speak up and chide someone older than you unless the remark was made directly to you or unless you were going to say "I am a jew, and I find that remark very offensive."

All speaking up would have done is embarrass the host and your relatives, make you look like a rude arrogant clod, and cause a ruckus that would have left a lot of hurt feelings. It wouldn't have changed anyone's opinion about Jews or served any other purpose. IOW in such a gathering and at such a young age it simply wasn't your place to speak up if none of your elders saw fit to do so.

You should also put that situation into it's bigger context, which you were probably not fully aware of at the time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austri...onal_Socialism

Do you seriously think anything you said or did at that party would have influenced anyone else's beliefs or behavior? I don't. So quit beating yourself up about it. It's never wise to start a fight unless you think it's small enough to win and big enough to matter. That situation was neither.
I agree with you and then I don't agree with you. What you have posted makes sense and is full of common sense - I can see that. Where I differ from your take is that I have heard several Holocaust survivors speak and they tend to have the message of Do something - don't let hate be accepted/go unchecked. I agree with this take too and what I've come up with is that perhaps we are both right - depending on the circumstances or the audience in question. To have called things out here would not have led to anyone changing their minds, totally agreed. But still.....I did let hate go unchecked and I have a hard time with that, even as I am researching Austria's role in the Holocaust. Something I am less than thrilled with is the fact that many of the Nazi bureaucrats that were part of the implementation of "The Final Solution" - many were Austrian and not German.

It's not an easy topic for me not is it easy for me to know where the lines are - but once again, I do see the common sense in your post and I don't believe either one of us is wrong - I'm thinking circumstances/audience are what needs to be factored in as to how do deal with such situations. Rob

PS Came back to add something interesting. I spoke to my Cousin Astrid in Vienna a few weeks ago and it turns out that Austria is now teaching about the Holocaust in their public education system. I don't know exactly WHAT they are being taught - the truth or a very sanitized version of it, and knowing Austria as I do I would guess it's the latter. But at least the topic is finally being addressed and Austria is no longer playing victim of the Germans as they did for many years after the War. At least it's something and at least it's a start. Rob

If I had said "white guy", after you read the story, maybe your mind would have assumed the "white guy" was the type that stormed the Capitol. The irony of appearance v speech was part of what made it so shocking.
Or as someone said, "If you think words aren't important, just consider the difference between wiseman and wiseguy."

Sound wisdom. "There are no simple solutions, only intelligent choices."

I understood your meaning. I was just snarkily pointing out that "gentleman" no longer means "gentleman", or much of anything else.

The last time there was an earthquake in Haiti I helped support recovery there and I am waiting to see if the same person returns so I can do so again. She is a certified trauma counselor and trilingual in English, Creole and French.

I do not let bae direct my charitable contributions.

Although the science says we should focus on getting initial doses to people and there is very minimal benefit to boosting healthy adults, the government has bowed to political pressure and authorized boosters for everyone over 18. I went onto my city's vaccine clinic website pretending to be a 20 year old seeking a first dose and could not get an appointment. The slots are taken up by the worried well. But hey we must be seen to be doing something, even if that something will have no impact on winter surges.

When am I getting my booster? As soon as I find it available. As a bonus, my new employer is paying $ 50.00 for us and anyone in our house hold to get the shot. It is just in me and my dw, but some employees with families that is a biggie. They will also pay me $ 20.00 to get a flu shot. We work in a mask-less office, so it is important we all stay safe.
