    An old friend returns...

I was out taking my evening kayak the other day, and I was joined by the Steller Sea Lion that frequents this shoreline. He surfaced behind me with a WOOF, it was quite loud, and I could smell his fishy breath. He followed along, trailing, for about 1/2 an hour.

Which was quite thrilling, as I was in a 10 foot folding kayak, and the Steller male was the same length, but considerably wider and heavier. I'm glad he was polite, as the water was about 400 feet deep, 50 degrees F, with about a 3 knot current, and it would have been unpleasant to go for an unplanned swim, or become a meal.

Wow! I can only imagine how wonderful that was. Love the pictures - so beautiful!

Bae, can you tell me what the model of folding kayak you have and have you had any issues with leaking?

It's one of the Oru folding Kayaks, the "Beach LT" model which isn't really suitable for heavy open water use, but it's just perfect for nearshore fun. No leaking after several years of use, it's basically made of the corrugated plastic that USPS mail bins are made out of, and seems to be holding up even on the rocky beaches here.

Beautiful! Must have been quite a thrill to get such an escort.

50 degrees? Wow, on my island on the other side of the continent it's 73. It's been great for swimming.

Lovely images and thoughts of your friend.

Funnily enough, some friends were over for a potluck this evening and discussing wishes. For some it was hot air ballooning, riding a elephant, etc. I keep thinking that kayaking would be wonderful to do. Other friends go out frequently sending photos of Long Point Bay on Lake Erie in the early morning sunrise; Do you get much fog when you are out kayaking? I love seeing videos of kayaking around the islands of BC.

Fog is quite common here in certain weather conditions. I try to avoid those, to avoid being run over or lost :-)
